I hate most the music they play in the shops but it's gar better than no music at all in my opinion. It makes it far less...awkward or something.

In some shops the music is awfully loud. Those who don't mind it will soon change their tune when the Christmas music starts in a few weeks.

I don't get the point of it at all. I'm sure there's some marketing explanation, but I'd be pretty shocked if this marketing ploy actually worked, whatever it is...

i used to work in dunnes and one of the managers said the reason the radio/music was on in the store was to help staff to get through the day, that they'd get a buzz from the music and it would help them to work better

exactly, penneys and the like are the worst for this, i like shopping there sometimes, its cheap and cheerful but its soooo quiet with no music in the background, just makes me want to leave as soon as possable tbh

Oh I don't mean that kind of music. I've worked in plenty of shops where there was music playing. I'm talking about shops like Champion Sports, The Jean Scene, etc. You know where they play really loud niteclub music? That's what I'm on about.

I don't mind regular, low-level music in shops. I'd much prefer that.

It feels like you can't talk too loudly coz people will be listening. It makes you a lot more aware of what's going on around you when it's quiet. It's unsettling.

Like LIDL or ALDI's too. Just an eerie quiet and the annoying beeping of the check out sound...

One of the reasons music is played is to make people who are in the shop feel more at ease, more relaxed and thus more likely to take their time and browse. Hence why shops like Penneys and Dunnes etc play it.

But I still don't get the need for nite-club level music in more "trendy" shops and sports shops. It's so off-putting to me. Do any of you actually like it?

And I don't mean all trendy stores. Topman and River Island manage to play modern music without it being at a headache-inducing level. The Jean Scene and Jack&Jones are two of the worst offenders, imo.

Whatever about the music I was in Topman today and you want to see the state of some of the freaks working there. Skinny jeans, wooly hats, boxers on show, hideous footwear, if they were my son I'd batter them if they came down in the morn looking like that!

And they didn't have any decent work pants in there either

The one that I really don't get is the Abercrombie & Fitch store here in London. There's always a massive queue to go into it, who queues to get into a clothes shop? Then at the entrance there's a male model with his top off whose sole purpose is to stand there without a top. Then when you get inside they have the music turned up and the lights turned down just like a club.
Nevermind the price and the fact that A&F makes you look like a twat

Yes its the pits. Was in some clothes shop in London during the summer. It was dark, crowed and the music was just OMMPHCHA OMMPHCHA OMMPHCHA OMMPHCHA at around 130db. If you swapped the clothes rails for a bar, it would have been complete.

I just don't get it. The studies are there to support slow, relaxing music while shopping which gets people to subconsciously take their time and spend more. I don't see how listening to Scooter's greatest hits aids in this endeavour

Ah low-level music can be headwrecking too when you actually work there. Chart music was fine on the playlists, but as soon as the recession happened Dunnes switched all their stores to playing unlicensed awful songs, so they don't have to pay the IMRO. Each playlist is comosed of half bland songs that you don't have register when they're playing- and then the other half is cringy horrendous songs. They can really help to depress you further unless you're in a great mood. Nothing worse than ringing another Dunnes and hearing the same awful song in synch. UGHHH!!

No they communicate with the people in their stock room. You're right though- I don't know how they can hear cause their music is so loud.

god yeah! i work in tesco and they play the same sh1te over and over again for months on end! the worse most depressing songs ever! and really bad covers! went over to the bank of ireland and heatons one day and they had the same cd playing!

can't wait for the xmas music :mad: (which would only have about 10 songs on loop)

When you start thinking the music in shops is too loud - it just means you're too old to be shopping there.
Switch to M&S instead, no music and a fantastic line in reasonably priced slacks to suit any occasion whether formal or casual.
