From the pictures I've seen, it's the usual mix of people in it for genuine reasons, and the layabout wasters who like to cause a fuss and use words they don't actually understand.

One of the fine fellows I've seen pictured addressing the group has been repeatedly banned on Boards for using alts, trolling, spamming, and just generally being a cúnt. He used to hang around NUIG, despite not being more than a diploma student. He ran for Education Officer in the SU a few years ago, accused the SU of being a Fianna Fáil puppet government and blamed the rise in registration fees on "the macroeconomics of the capitalist state".

Oh, and he's also shown holding a rainbow flag, despite him generally labelling people he doesn't like as poofs and fags.

It makes no sense.. if you agree with the sentiment of the protest, then there's no need to dismiss it just because some group you don't share ideals with are present.

Their intentions may be good but 100 or so people camping out on Dame street isn't going to do anything. Judging by the description of the people currently out there I don't see the general population joining them any time soon.

That's the US, the situation is different over here in Ireland.

Their demands are unlikely to ever be met anyway. I'm not too into American politics but i'm fairly sure things like:

"Institute a universal single payer healthcare system. To do this all private insurers must be banned from the healthcare market as their only effect on the health of patients is to take money away from doctors, nurses and hospitals preventing them from doing their jobs and hand that money to wall st. investors."
Guaranteed living wage income regardless of employment.
Free college education.
Open borders migration. anyone can travel anywhere to work and live.
Immediate across the board debt forgiveness for all. Debt forgiveness of sovereign debt, commercial loans, home mortgages, home equity loans, credit card debt, student loans and personal loans now! All debt must be stricken from the "Books." World Bank Loans to all Nations, Bank to Bank Debt and all Bonds and Margin Call Debt in the stock market including all Derivatives or Credit Default Swaps, all 65 trillion dollars of them must also be stricken from the "Books." And I don't mean debt that is in default, I mean all debt on the entire planet period.

There's a lot of anger and disillusionment in this country at the moment and there's a number of twists of the screw yet to come.

Micky, your definition of "normal people" is basically anyone who doesn't go to a protest, as the second you do you are a waster, loser, wanker, unemployed pathetic student etc etc etc.

Stop me if i'm wrong there.

The simple fact is what started as a single location protest has now cropped up in hundreds of sites all over the US and is spreading to other countries.

Whether it has any impact remains to be seen...but it seems to have mobilised people for whatever reason.

I just had a look at the rest of Occupy Wall Street's list of demands. It looks as if it was written by a college student who had a glance at a Wikipedia article on economics who then decided on a whim to write out a list of poorly thought-out and poorly expressed list of unreasonable demands. I don't see a protest of that standard to have much chance of success.

I would love to see people occupying the park every sunday. Start with a 100, next week 300, next 500, next 1000. Spread the word, soon enough people will start to take notice. It will happen, the only problem is soon enough anarchists will start making a balls of it and the media will spin it that everyone is just trouble makers and it will go nowhere.
