Charity Wages - Mary Davis

I had this over in 'Volunteerism' but nobody is biting, so..

With this latest Mary Davis 'p60 story', she is paid roughly €160,000/year for her role in 'Special Olympics'. Is this the norm for somebody working at this level for a charity?

Do other charities pay as much, or more?

Why do you want to attract the best? Being the CEO of a charity is not like being the CEO of a business, you're not actually producing a good and there isn't the same motivation to get results(Regardless of how much you pay the CEO).

In all honesty, I'd expect the head of a charity to be on less money because it is a charity. They shouldn't be on the same wage as a head of a similarly sized business because the concept of charity should run throughout the organisation, and the less they give at the top, the more there is to give to the people at the receiving end.

I'm probably naive about it like.

If it's necessary to pay CEO's that sort of money for charity work fair enough but dont then make out that your a charitable person as she is clearly getting well payed for her work

Charity begins at home and this is certainly true for that wench Mary Davis,giving other peoples funds to her spouse and his cronies.
We have had 2 good women in the Aras let's not fook it up by putting a money grabbing crony sidekick like Davis or an extremist like Dana.
Time for Ireland to avoid scandal and Michael D is the only one who is genuine.

Is her MDship of the Special Olympics a full time 37 hour a week job or is it a few hours here and there? Yes lots of MDs receive the same sort of salary but most of them have to put in the hours and work their arses off for it.

It always amazes me how people can dismiss people who work in charities as needing to be martyrs or something. I'm not going to be giving Davis my 1st preference, but I'd like to point out a few things:

1) She is a genuinely nice person. I have had dealings with her, and she is genuinely nice.

2) She brought the Special Olympics to Ireland in 2003. It was the FIRST EVER time that event had been staged outside the USA. Thousands of people came from all over the world to our country, bringing with them money. To spend. Here.

3) Apparently running a multinational organisation which not only fosters a sense of community, but also raises huge amounts of money for people with intellectual disabilities, gives them some of the only opportunities for health promotion, learning new skills, making mew friends and having a paying job is a bad thing. Oh yeah, and at the Special Olympics every world games there are opportunities for the athletes (and they ARE athletes, I challenge most of you to play against them in their chosen specialty sports and you will get your asses handed to you on a plate) from developing nations to have full health and dental checks that they wouldn't get in their own countries. For free.

Apparently everyone in the country should be on the 'average industrial wage'. Yeah, I'd like to to see anyone in here run the Special Olympics for Europe and Asia do that in a 9-5 job for a tenner an hour.

i agree with what you've said here. im amazed that she is so low on the polls atm. i'd vote for her 100 times over than dana or grey mitchell

baby and crumble - it seems to have escaped many people's attention that charity has become big business, and some organisations are now so big that their raison d'etre is long forgotten and self perpetuation is the name of the game. I don't know about the Special Olympics but a lot of the organisations dealing with cancer fall into this category. I really don't see why the CEOs of charities should receive such outrageous salaries and don't give me the 'peanuts and monkeys' argument as we all know where that got us with the banks. If running charities is so arduous perhaps people should only do it as an act of philanthropy and take a year out of their 'high flying' (obviously!) private/public sector careers to do so? That way they could indeed afford to take the average industrial wage - perhaps topped up by the enterprise from which they are taking time out?
