Passat 1.6FSI or 1.4 TSI or anything bigger?

hi
in the market for a car. i have come down to Passat (purely on the decision from heart rather than brain).
looking for something 2007 and later and petrol only
i can see plenty of 1.6FSI engines.
searched through this boards forum and have seen not many good comments on it. :-( big car with small engine.
should i go for 1.8FSI or bigger?
or should i try for 1.4 TSI which has very good reviews with its Turbo engine which has fixed many of FSI defects.
also there are very few TSIs and are nearly 10k+ in price.

what about mileage on these cars?
there are 2008 cars with 190k kms. how can one drive so much in 3 years???

There are not too many TSI engines around I think due to high demand, however there are quite a few of the 2.0 FSI engines around if tax isn't a big problem, although I have heard from people that he 1.6 is acceptable...

As for 190k km It's only about 40k miles a year which isn't too bad, could be reps driving length and breath of the country on a weekly basis. Nice car to do 190k km in though.

i believe that big motorway mileage with good handling of car is better than small city mileage with rough driving.
what kind of mileage is acceptable on a passat?
are there any known FSI problems other than small engine in big car?

My dad has one from 06-10, put 29,000kms on it. I drove it a good bit and found it grand. He has a 1.4 TSI and it's a better engine alright.

I wouldn't bother with a 07 2.0, they're a 150 bhp engine and I can't imagine them to have a good resale value in a few years time.

I've driven a few rental 1.4tsi Passats for about a thousand miles in total and never found them wanting for power. Can easily keep up with traffic and not too uneconomical driven sensibly. Feels livelier than my fathers 2 litre petrol Mondeo despite it having 20bhp more.

From my ownership experience, the 1.6 FSI is a dog. Avoid.

Get the 1.4 tsi. The 2.0/1.8/1.6 fsi are only pigs of things.

as of now, NO as my budget is 8k.

i heard the similar(negative reviews) on 1.6 Mondeo Zetec (new model) too.
i don't know why these car makers make these small engines :-(

Yeah not sure if you will find a 1.4 TSI for 8k... There are plenty of nice cars out there for 8k though!

Passat 1.4 TSi has a turbo and produces 122bhp. That engine is well able to move the Passat around. It replaced the 1.6 FSi which had only 115bhp. The 1.6 FSi engine was not great and really had a short shelf life in the VAG range. If looking at the 2.0 FSi just remember there is very little market for these cars in this country and they are hard to sell on, so be prepared to keep it until it dies.

Also take note that the B6 Passat suffered from alot of problems that were not really ironed out until early 2008 so 2008 should be the minimum you should be looking at. BTW you will not buy a decent 1.4 TSi Passat for €8k.

The second one is the base model which is poverty spec. I would have the 1.8 if the tax isnt crazy on it. On second thoughts the mileage is crazy.

The 1.8 looks like something that was run by a fleet company, ie. Properly maintained. Can't see any major issue once you get a warranty and the tax is cheap.

As for the BOG spec 1.4... LOL

To me it looks expensive for what it is though I don't know what they cost new.. It's still the most basic Mondeo that's near 5 years old with more than 100k miles on it... pricey.

the problem is all those mondeos/passats are pricey :-(

Lads, why were some people diss'ing the 1.8TSi earlier in th thread? Afaik, that engine only launched in late 2006, does it have reliability issues or whatever. I ask, because I've driven that engine twice, both in Octavia's. Always thought it was a lovely engine, very very quiet for a petrol and not as bad on fuel as a 160bhp petrol would suggest

Of course it pisses all over the Passat, it's a much bigger, turbo'd version that cost alot more and is now worth even less than an equivalent Passat!

It was 35k new and is smaller than a Passat in overall length (after checking there very quickly, it is in fact over 100mm shorter). These were also turbocharged throughout the range.

I think you're thinking this is an S80.

I think you can run a motorcheck on it online or cartell. Or just read the service history carefully...:)

I think you're thinking this is an S80.

That was 35k new? Even with the leather etc.? Jesus... Not bad value, pity it was a really old design in 06. Still looking lovely now, though.

They came down to 35k around '06 for the standard 2.0T S.

I'd still say that particular one was a bit less than 40k brand new. I think SE spec only added about 2-3k to the price.

They were indeed.

Sure I remember it was one of the reasons my father backed out of buying an 18 month old T5; it was priced more than a brand new 2.0T.

People probably remember that up until quite recently, SE spec in Volvo's got you leather and everything for a minimum outlay. It was a major selling point.
