It's a real shame that this has happened.

Feargal Quinn's book- 'Crowning the customer' was required reading for a lot of Marketing students for over a decade.

I never worked in Superquinn- but as a kid I did pick the raspberries and strawberries that were sold there.

If I wasn't overweight, I'd be starting a campaign to get everyone to go in and buy a few doughnuts........

For those wondering about Sainsbury's vs Waitrose... Waitrose products have been on the shelves of Superquinn for a long time

I find this a pity, though. Superquinn are Irish. Foreign chains really don't make the commitment to stocking IRISH products, which I personally find offensive. We're in Ireland, we should be buying Irish. It's not just the 2800 jobs that may go with this, what about all the suppliers who have been supplying them?

It's all very well saying "oh it'll be great if Asda/Waitrose/Sainsbury's/Morrison's took over", but that may not be very good for Ireland in the end. I go into tesco and dunnes and try to buy a 2 pack of IRISH (stamped IE - as in from the Republic, not the north, which is stamped GB but marketed as Irish) chicken breasts and guess what? Most of the time I can't. That matters to me, and honestly, it should matter to any Irish person who doesn't want to see Irish farms going under.

I like superquinn but it's just not competitive. It's my local supermarket, the other day they had 4 chicken breasts for €9.99 my butcher does 10 for the same price and 4 fresh burgers for €9.99, the butcher does 6 for €5.00.

It all adds up, and most of us have to be prudent with our money now.

(am a bit sad, knowing all the prices-am turning into my mother:eek:)

I'm walking distance from my local one. Gonna miss the bakery and the bread slicing machine. And the 5 euro breakfast deal. Decent craft beer selection too (for a supermarket)

I'd welcome any of the big UK chains. I do a run to Belfast twice a year to stock up non perishables in Asda.

Have to agree with you there, I do half my shopping in Lidl, veg and the like and things that you cant get there I get in Superquinn. A few years ago I might have done it all in Superquin so if a lot of people do that it adds up.

Somebody in a leather chair in a Tesco office somewhere is giggling like a schoolgirl at this news.

Which is a pity, because Tesco are shíte.

If it does go, I hope Dunnes or Asda/Sainsbury's can buy it. But I'd rather it stayed well put, tbh. Great shop - spend half my childhood being dragged around the place :P

For the anti-Tesco brigade- Superquinn was doing quite nicely advertising that any Irish products dropped by Tesco could be bought in Superquinn. They weren't the cheapest- but it was relaxing going shopping there for the most part (aside from some of their more hair brained marketing ideas- like the back to the 80s weekends).......

Yes- they have had Waitrose products for some time- particularly ready meals- the fresh stuff they got in from the Butler's Pantry was far superior though. Look at the fresh lasagnes/curries etc at the deli counter- they might have cost a little more than the pre-packaged stuff- but by god they were worth it.......

Does anywhere else stock Butler's Pantry products?

I don't think you can blame Irish shoppers for voting with their feet if supermarkets have excessive mark ups and until such a time as these multiples ie tescos, dunnes, superquinns etc reveal their margins by publishing accounts the public will remain sceptical.
For all that though as a supermarket I believe it's a viable business it was never worth what they paid for it though it's as simple of that.

I really feel sorry for the staff there. No doubt they will have weeks of 'I here ye're jobs are all gone'.

True the staff had great conditions and even if the jobs are saved by a buyout I'm sure the staff know their jobs will never really be the same. No other supermarket staffs the stores like them.

I would love to see M&S or Waitrose takeover the one in Waterford...just for the food. Musgraves is def a viable option. Some Super Values are brilliant.

I wouldn't be surprised if Tesco did buy some of the stores. They seem to be the only chain opening new stores at the same rate as a few years ago. Even with in a stone's throw of each other.

im not anti tesco's as such but they will no have a very big share of the market which isnt good for anyone but them.

that's got me thinking of would there be a market for good quality irish produce store. i think we produce some great food here and definitely want to see that continue. i fear though that if superquinn does go it'll be bad for ireland!

Superquinn here in Waterford is a great store, staff are great and the quality of the products is top notch

If you ever need something out of the ordinary you know they'l stock it, might be a little bit more expensive than it possibly should be but at least you got what you were looking for. Their product range is great

The quality of the fresh food is the best around, meats fish breads etc, you wont do better

they had some cracking deals lately, half price meats and fish and more

I hope its held together and pulls through new owners or whatever

Like shopping anywhere- it pays to shop around.......
Re the chicken- it was sold by weight, not by number of fillets- the 680grm pack (4 fillets) was 8.99, its half price this week though.

I don't know anyone who still did their entire grocery shop in there- I'm on half the net take home pay I was on 5 years ago, I certainly can't afford it. It was lovely to go in for the goodies though- the premium ham, the fresh bread, the fruit and veg- the fresh produce that was just better than you could get elsewhere. Oh- and of course the yummy Christmas puddings at Christmas.......

Apparently the business is doing just fine- its the massive debt that Select Retail Holdings incurred when they bought out the business, thats sinking it- its actually a fully viable supermarket, aside from that debt.......

their foreign range is top notch. Pricey but the best pesto/olive oil/balsamic vinegar I've ever had was from their Itialian range, feckin gorgeous. I'm hungry now

and don't get me started on their fresh roasted chickens nom nom nom :pac: Tesco et all pale in significance

Musgraves are relatively weak in Dublin where SQ are at their strongest. Could be a nice fit.
