Dell inspiron 640m charger problems

hi guys, i know there have been other people asking about charger problems but maybe you can shed light on my problem.
have a inspiron 640m, its about 4 years old (time for an upgrade i know)
recently the original power cable has become frayed and damaged at the laptop end so needs to be held a certain way to charge the laptop which is quite annoying!
its a 65W ac adapter PA-12 family. i would buy a replacement online but heres the problem, im currently travelling in Australia.
i went to a computer store and the guy sold me a new charger for $60. it worked for 2 days but now it isnt charging the laptop anymore, it just says that it is plugged in but not charging.
the replacement is PA-10 family, the guy in the shop said it was the same thing, are these compatible or was i just shafted?:mad:
any help will be greatly appreciated!
