Reading about the off licence thread got me thinking,what would Ireland be like if had 24 hour bars,would antisocial behaviour go down by people leaving at their own time?

Some pubs will take up the 24 hours on certain busy nights like Friday or Saturday night but I don’t think you would find many that will be open at 5:30 AM on a Tuesday.

If it was introduced this is probably what would happen in most towns Ireland.

7:00PM people go out to their local pubs.

1:00AM most of the pubs close up except for O’Whatyeamocallsits witch stays open till 5 on the weekend (Fri & Sat) some people go on to the late pub others go home.

5:00AM O’Whatyeamocallsits closes.

Not much would really change except maybe in the larger cities with the numbers of people in them needed to make having a place open at alternative hours viable.

I work in a country with 24 hour licenses.

Two of the bars/clubs I look after can open 24hrs. But we don't use that time allowed. Would be too messy.
Both venues open about 3pm. Sunday-thurs hey will close 1-3am.
Fri-sat is anywhere from 5am-6:30am

People need to sleep. You find that they naturally go home when they feel like it and the drinking rate slows down for the majority. They build stamina

Of course there are now places that open at 10pm, get busy from 4am and close at 9am. But only a handful of those around.
Others open at 6am.
There is always someone around, especially if big sports games are on at odd hours.
Nothing better than having a big fry up and a pint at 6am watching a sports final with 200 other people

Same with anything. Like the bike rent scheme or the smoking ban. People always think "sure that'll never work here" but in the end it does. A bit of conviction and confidence in the system with political will to see it through and there will be no problems.

People need to have more personal responsibility for their actions and then they'll behave like responsible adults. When liberties are restricted and artificial social constructs raised, its a case of treating people like children. Look at the consequences on any weekend night on the streets of our towns and cities.

One of the problems with 24 hour drinking laws in Ireland would be suburban pubs, especially in residential areas. We have one pub in our vicinity and since it opened the Sunday night's are bad. I am a heavy sleeper so it doesn't really bother me but for anyone who would be a light sleeper it would be bad. At least it dies down at two or three but if it were 24 hour, mother of jaysus.

Now I think on Friday nights and Saturday nights in the city/town centres there should be no closing laws per se. Pubs/clubs should have to present a case to the District Court for the licence extension, with conditions but it should be made easier for publicians and club owners to obtain it. The duty of care to run an orderly house should be retained through the usual court bond. It is ridiculous to put 20,000 out on the street simultaneously in say Dublin. The majority of self regulate and you would not have this post-apocalyptic vision people dream up when they hear of 24 hour drinking. In England most pubs close up at the regular hours because it simply does not pay to keep zombies on the premises, incapable of buying or consuming any more alcohol.

24hr pubs would be a publicans dream come true. But sure if it was up to them off-licenses would close at 6pm.

I live in a city with 24-hour drinking, but to be honest most ordinary pubs don't do it. I have found that the average pub seems to close anywhere between half 10 and half 11. It tends to be mainly clubs that stay open although I have seen a couple of pubs that stay open til 4am on weekend nights. One late bar I used to go to would basically stay open as long as there were enough people, if it was quiet he would close - and it was probably the most relaxed bar in that particular area.

Early closing pubs don't seem to be so much of a problem for people, because you can easily buy booze at any time of night in shops/off-licenses. This removes the last minute drunken panic of people frantically trying to throw pints into themselves and allows everyone to bring drink home should they want to continue drinking.

What also helps disperse the drunken madness on the streets at various closing times is the easy availability of regular 24 hour public transport. No waiting for hours in the taxi queue, people getting stranded. There are also loads of places you can get late night food, coffee etc - not just chippers, so it doesn't feel like the entire world is crammed into one McDonalds. Certain areas of the city have very few pubs, but would have 24 hour cafes and restuarants that people seem to hang out in all night instead of the pub.

Whatever about 24/7 pubs ending the mayhem that is the reality of our streets most nights, it would probably help to boost tourism. I imagine a lot of people are put off coming to Ireland on their holliers when they hear that they have to go home so early. We're being thrown out onto the street when things are only just getting started in Madrid. And they're an hour ahead.

CNN's travel site had an article recently about Dublin and one of the things it warned about was the early closing times.

If it was handled correctly then it wouldn't be a problem. Lots of pubs beside where I live, restaurant in the ground floor of my apt. building and noise is not a problem. All patrons have to be moved in after midnight and the chairs/tables folded up. Never had any issues with this. Any bar that flaunts the rules or has noise problems will otherwise have to face the consequences.

It would probably cut down on binge drinking.

When I lived in places with 24 hour bars, we would head out late and drink at a leisurely pace as opposed to drinking large amounts in the short time given.

It would also cut down on anti social behaviour in my opinion as large groups of people would not leave a venue all at once.

when I was working behind the bar it amazed me how some people react at last orders ordering 5 & 6 pints then a few vodka & red bulls, then look for take outs when there goin home, it sounds a bit crazy but I dont think people would be as messy drunk if there wasnt a time limit for them, if you cant have something you want it more so if the pub was constantly open people would eventually just get tired and head home

Well you wouldn't have to head into the pub early if there was no closing time. You could suit yourself and not have to work around the closing time.

Read the 1st few pages and skipped to the end so sorry if already posted.

Loads of people work shift and we are no longer in a Monday to Friday 9-5 world.

Pubs selling alcohol, and other intoxicants, should be open 24/7 since the all can be gotten 24/7 illegal already.

But our public intoxication laws should be enforced with Gardaí doing F S T, with the introduction of on the spot fines which increase the more times you're fined.

This BS status now of penalising 95% of the population because 0.1% of the population can't control themselves can't continue.

I'd say the novelty would wear off for most of us after a while and we'd be developing a more mature and sensible approach towards alcohol consumption.

But, of course, some retards would have to go and do something retarded, and then the ****tard joe duffy brigade would be calling for the whole system to be scrapped.

Considering they've only recently introduced the ridiculous 'no booze after 10pm' law, I doubt this will go ahead in the nanny state anytime soon but its something that I would love to see!

I've worked behind a bar and seen the last orders rush too many times-people go insane. I'll be honest and say I've fallen victim to it a few times myself if im having a particularly good night and gone up and ordered 2-3 where really I'll only have time for one (stopped this now conciously, but I can see how its done). The you end up either leaving it there or knocking it back, neither of which is good.

The fact that we are a nation of people seen as 'up for the craic' and known for our drinking/Guinness etc, yet are ushered home to bed at the end of the evening by law just screams stupid. And it doesnt cut down on alcohol consumption, it just means everyones on the streets at the same time every night-the dangers of which are obvious

I hope it comes in soon it probably wont but any time I have been in 24 hr places everyone drinks more casually there not fighting the clock and its peoples choice when to go home which results in a more staggered approach to people leaving and most people would leave between 2.30 and 4.30.

I don't think it would really apply to the rural pub but i think the choice should be available when renewing their licences
