If ireland had 24 hour bars

Reading about the off licence thread got me thinking,what would Ireland be like if had 24 hour bars,would antisocial behaviour go down by people leaving at their own time?

it's just a question of whether you want to have them stumbling home at 4am, or 8am. The 4am option will have less of an impact on the rest of society.

Might encourage a small slow down with the last couple of drinks, as you say at closing time, the ordering of a couple of beers rather than one, but come on, people here just drink too much.

It makes logical sense, IMO, anyone who has worked in a busy night-spot would agree that one of the busiest times of the night is the last half hour.

Makes more sense that people would realise theres somewhere to move on to and keep the night going, and not buy/drink those last 2 rushed pints at 2am.

Less hassle in clearing bars, as people would move off of their own accord.

Reduce numbers in take-away/taxi outlets (as other poster said)

All leading to: less frustration at being told to go home, and not treated like a child.. Which I think causes a lot of the problems we see.

If it was brought in there would be initial carnage as people who aren’t used to it and lack self control would just not stop drinking that would and should be down to the individual and I think we should have the option of places being open 24 hours as we shouldn’t create legislation simply because idiots can’t control themselves when sensible people can. The good thing is that if it was implemented correctly it would stagger the times at which people leave places so that you don’t get one time where all the pubs empty and people flood the streets looking for taxis, food, somewhere else they can drink, or a fight.

The problem would be that even though you could legally stay open 24 hours only very few places would. A business like a bar can’t stay open 24 hours it needs at some point to close to clean and staffing a place 24 hours a day is expensive and you just won’t get the trade to pay for it at 6 o’clock in the morning. This means that only one or two big places would stay open 24 hours for maybe one or two nights a week with everywhere else closing at around the same times anyway and won’t really change much.

One of the points Im trying to make is that IMO I think its a lot to do with "being allowed" sell/buy a drink at whatever time of day or night.

I think, down through the centuries, we Irish have learnt to be "rebellious" to being told what to do... add drink to that and it heightens that behaviour,, We are famous the world over for having the craic and the beers, not for fighting in the streets for a taxi/chipper at 3am, and I would say a vast majority of people are like that. (craic and beer, not fighting)

Agreed.

When ever I go on holidays there is a certain club I frequent, it closes when it starts to get quiet, - if its busy, it stays open. Simples.

I Live in a city with 24 hr drinking laws, my thoughts are that it should be introduced, people will go mad for a couple of years, but then it will calm down, certain pubs/clubs will become destinations for certain times of the day and the novelty will wear off.

What you'll find though, is that only a handful of places will stay open past 6am.

If the rest of Europe can manage it, surely it's do-able

I don't see the problem here. I agree only a few places would stay open because not everyone is going to want to stay out all night drinking so not all places can afford to stay open. That's the whole point. If you want go home, you go home, you want stay out drinking, you stay out drinking ... and these places will cater for your wants. No stress, no queues, live like a human

I think for the vast majority of people it would extend their Friday/Saturday night from 2-4am to 6-7am.

I live in a city with 24 hour bars and the only time they are really busy is from about 2am to 7am on Weekend nights.

Personally I am afraid of 24 hours bars, they take all my money and give me a 3 day hangover

I personally think it should be introduced, as its already been stated I think most fights,disturbances happen because of the closing hours you have a mass influx of people going into take aways, or trying to get taxis all drunk its a recipe for a disaster if you think about it. Yes a some people are just idiots but having less idiots on the street at the same time would result in less trouble.

Also ive always founds myself when ive been in European cities with 24hr drinking to be a lot more responsible , ill go home when I feel tired or drunk whatever the time may be, were as in Ireland youll often be standing in a bar a 2a.m realise the time and make a mad dash for the bar to buy more drink which is foloowed by staff rushing you to drink up and get of the premises which in turn has people throwing drink down there neck which is never a good idea as it leads to higher levels of intoxication.

No, I average a 6-7am night every 2-3 months. I really do try and avoid them now. However when I was younger and it was new to me, yes most weekends would have been like this.

When I use to go them a lot, I would be like a zombie in work on a Monday even with going to bed early on a Sunday night. Also it is very hard on the pocket if you go most weekends. Once I withdrew $200 at about 3am and the following morning I had about $20 in my pocket in change. Bit vague on where I spent it. Did not help the hangover

I have really grown out of them now but I have friends who do it each weekend.

The only real problem is if everywhere else closes at the same normal time and one or two places are 24 hours everyone who wants to continue drinking will go here and it may cause the same problems when they do kick out as before. Personally I'm in favor of it as the current system is very aimed towards people who work 9-5 Monday to Friday and doesn’t take into account at all the people who work night shifts or even people who work in bars themselves. I know when I worked in pubs I would have loved to be able to go somewhere besides where I worked or a nightclub for a couple of drinks after work

Was just wondering why many rural pubs don't really get going until after closing time and so many city and urban pubs have "lock ins"?
Lots of people are'nt happy with the licensing laws as they are...

Everywhere wouldn't have to close at the "normal" time. Normal time only exists now because of the laws. The whole business model landscape would change under 24 hour licensing freedom. That's a whole different story though, and something which would probably get our government's friends and family sweating in their diamond and shíte encrusted plastic leather pants.

Anyway, even if everyone was thrown out at the same time, and people had a choice to go somewhere else for a late drink, it would obviously not cause the same problems as before because people would be happy no matter what ... as in they are choosing to go home or choosing to stay out, not being forced to get a cab or freeze to death or sleep on the streets.
