I couldn't believe my eyes this morning when I woke up. The new hackers on the scene, Lulzsec, had released 62,000 people's emails and the subsequent passwords. I checked to see if any of my families accounts had been breached but luckily they were no where to be seen on the list.

What are your ideas on this group. Do you think they are doing the world a favor and showing that the internet is not a place where you should feel completely safe, or do you think that they are pure criminals.

I feel like I'm taking a position on the fence here. I am a great supporter of the hacktivist group, Anonymous, and all that they do. However I feel that this splinter group has no moral substance and are purely feeding their ego.

When do you cross the line? Is what they are doing good for online security? Is there more of a meaning behind their attacks, rather than being "just for the lulz!"?

I have been following their twitter feed almost religiously, in awe, of some of the things that they have done so far.

Personally I have little time for this group but I would love to get your opinions.

Please stop asking for a download link to the list. The information on that list is highly sensitive. I highly doubt that Boards.ie or the users mentioned on the list would like this information to be shared

I am sure even a proper "safe" password would have been intercepted. I assume they just hacked a websites database (who didnt encrypt properly) or else used keyloggers etc on made up login forms.

None the less, people are idiots. 123456 comming up so many times, along with password is shocking. I honestly didnt know there was people who used actual dictionary words as passwords, let alone "password".

Agreed... there are some pretty hefty passwords in there like "dk54832" for example. That's not too bad of a password if you ask me. Maybe a upper-case in there as well but yes I agree, this had nothing to do with how strong your password was. The website is at fault.

The big issue here is that people are fools and lots use the same password for other sites including their emails, paypals, amazon etc

The big issue is that people put their trust in sites that are allegedly secure and aren't.

I have been on the net since 95 and only in the last two years have I implemented a very secure (Until someone bothers their ass cracking it) password system. Mainly because my old passwords would never have been found in any brute force dictionary.... but the fact that one could be stolen form a site and found in one or two others has worried me...

Here's an easy way to have a random password for every site and remember it. You need a strong secure one, something random like "GnI1eZfS" which you memorise (or write down till you have it memorised). Then for every site you visit you add the first two consonants, then first two vowels, so your password for Amazon becomes "GnI1eZfSmzaa", for Boards becomes "GnI1eZfSbroa", Google becomes "GnI1eZfSggoo" and so on.

Good idea. I have a password like that "GnI1eZfS". But I don't change it for the 2 sites I use it for. Good idea.

Listen their is nothing that the users could have done. They trusted their information in the hands of the website and that website let them down.

I do not however feel sorry for those who use the same password for all of their online accounts.

So, some of the emails were pulled from a porn website with the intention of embarrassing people in front of their family. I wonder if my name is on there; if it was, I wouldn't be embarrassed. My family and friends know that I watch porn; as do several other members of my family.

An email address is purely an address. We are not asking for your personal data. We have the list and were kind enough, after checking our own, to check others for them.

I have been kind enough to help the 10 people who were worried about their emails. Its up to you of course.

A 19-year-old suspected of being a mastermind behind notorious international computer hacking group LulzSec has been arrested in Essex, after a joint operation by the FBI and Scotland Yard.

It comes just days after the group claimed it brought down the US Central Intelligence Agency's website.

The alleged hack on CIA.gov occurred on the same day the group opened a telephone request line so its fans could suggest potential targets.

On Twitter, the group wrote: "Tango down - CIA.gov - for the lulz".

The teenager is being questioned under the Computer Misuse Act and Fraud Act.

He was arrested by officers from the force's e-crime unit.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "The arrest follows an investigation into network intrusions and distributed denial of service attacks against a number of international business and intelligence agencies by what is believed to be the same hacking group.

"Searches at a residential address in Wickford, Essex, following the arrest last night have led to the examination of a significant amount of material.

"These forensic examinations remain ongoing."

The Met and Essex Police are working "in cooperation" with the FBI, the spokesman said.

The PCeU was assisted by officers from Essex Police and have been working in co-operation with the FBI.

The teenager was arrested on suspicion of Computer Misuse Act, and Fraud Act offences and was taken to a central London police station, where he currently remains in custody for questioning.

Searches at a residential address in Wickford, Essex, following the arrest last night have led to the examination of a significant amount of material. These forensic examinations remain ongoing.

If its truly him and they have the evidence, its very easy for a hacker to cover their tracks in seconds. They mostly run virual machines out through vpn, which can be mashed in a second or two leaving no traces on their machine.
