New context to rape tape in Mayo

Further to the revelations a few months back, it turns out that a new tape shows that Gardai in Mayo were consistently accused of rape while going about their duties.

On one recording a women who was being lifted from a tractor by gardai (female gardai were also present) accused gardai of trying to rape her.

This certainly provides context to the remarks the gardai made while talking amongst themselves. I am confident that all this will come out in the course of the GSOC investigation, as will very interesting context in the earlier part of the original tape which caused the controversy.

I don't understand. Are these tapes forgeries made by splicing unrelated words together? If not the police were making a joke about rape.

I would be surprised if those that released the tape weren't fully informed of the situation and were ignorant that protest supporters had, at any time, used rape as an accusatory weapon. Of course, I am making some assumptions here but I would think the odds that they knew their supporters had made such claims whilst being arrested are pretty good.

They were, context being that they were being accused of rape.
In any case people joke around in private, but to publicly accuse someone of rape or of threatening to do so is pretty despicable

I always thought there was something very fishy going on regarding those tapes.
It now looks like the Gardai had an in-house joke about rape after being accused about it several times. it would explain everything and make the whole thing more logical.

I await eaglerly a statement of condemnation from the National Women's Council, and various media outlets on false accusations of rape being hurled by protesters at gardai trying to their job in extremely difficult circumstances.

Young people especially have to be more aware of the seriousness of issues such as rape, sexual assault, prostitution, human trafficking and pornography.

Two of these things are consensual and have nothing whatsoever to do with sexual coercion. Can AH spot the rogues?

Seriously though, bracketing rape in with porn and prostitution is utterly ridiculous. All it does is trivialize rape. (note: I do not include trafficking or forced prostitution in this statement.)

Comparing an act of coercion to a consensual act is quite frankly moronic.

It's pretty disheartening when everybody I mentioned this story to immediately spat acid and accused the Gardaì as "utter fùckin' scum". The seeds already planted thanks to the well-placed wordings of ill-informed Facebook groups and shìtty tabloids.

The inherent dislike for the Gardaì made this accusation all the more easier to swallow for people.

Meanwhile, gardai are now investigating the actual rape of a 22-year-old English woman, now living in Ireland, at a mini-festival run by protesters last Sunday week.
The woman was found naked and in a very distressed state behind a row of portaloos by other people at the Party Against the Pipe festival at Aughoose on the bank holiday weekend.

Order of events:

1. There are some general protesters who just love protesting, will protest anything and who's culture involves hating the Gardaí. These are not in Mayo.
2. Something happens in Mayo that genuinely should be protested at (imho)
3. Non-local protesters go to Mayo and turn the conversation away from 'Should Shell be allowed there' to 'Are you pro- or anti- Gardaí'.

The locals deserve a much bigger say in what happens in their area tbh, and these guys are doing them more harm than good. It's completely selfish.

still have not heard anything about this on the news, suppose it would be hard to put into context but the whole thing makes sense now.

Ya cant wait for those with voices that are listened to (rape crisis center etc) to come forward and voice their concerns over the abuse of using the word rape like it was an swear word almost against people.

The saddest thing about all of this is it is going to impact negatively on real rape victims because the protesters are reducing rape to nothing more than a form of protest and a method of turning public opinion against those charged with capturing sex offenders.

Exactly. To them the protest has become more important than the crime. Its a very sad state of affairs and the people who pushed that agenda plus the willing media have a lot to answer for. Real victims must be feeling very bad as a result of such a heinous crime being used in this way.

Surely the whole point of this issue is not that anyone cried rape but that one garda commented to another, in what he thought was private, that a woman needed to be raped!.
This is unacceptable, if true.
I hope that no-one reading this thread would find rape funny enough to joke about it to a work mate or friend.

If the tape is real then the garda in question needs repremanding and re-educating but the whole thing seems to have growing out of all proportion.

TBH, I'm delighted to have this context as I was so unsure when I heard about the tape. I just don't know any men who make jokes like this, or ever have. Perhaps I'm hanging out with the right crowd. Who knows.

And also, is it true that the women have refused to release the full tapes. Someone said this is because there was other stuff on them that didn't reflect well on their accusations. Perhaps there are other mentions of the word rape from the women, as there were on the tractor. In short, the Gardai may have been making light of a barrage of accusations.. Yeah, you don't joke about this sort of stuff, but one has to consider how stressful all of this would be on young Gardai (and old). We live in a PC which is a nightmare, and if you're a man you can be accused of anything. That's my opinion anyway.

Yes.. two weekends ago someone was raped during the Party against the Pipe music festival.

It's clear the protesters have more to worry about from those within their ranks, rather than the Gardai. I don't think there's a tape of the 'real' rape, so it hasn't got anything like the coverage of the women hurling abuses and the Gardai jokes using the 'word' rape.

How mad is that. Some poor girl is actually abused, but the media value of the 'rape tape' makes the physical attack pale into insignificance against a propoganda value of a word for the protest community.

Protesters seriously need to re-calibrate their ethical standards and get incensed and up in arms about something truly awful that actually happened.

I have no idea why other members of the media are not reporting the issue, especially places like Indymedia who can obviously reach many of the people who would have been present at the event and may be able to provide important details to the Gardai.

I've actually sent them an email asking them why no mention has been made of the event on their site when it could be very beneficial to the investigation.
