So, one of the great films of all time is being remade... "The Dambusters"

At the start Peter Jackson wanted to keep as close as possible to the original script which included keeping the dog named ******. However, studio execs succeeded in changing the dogs name to Digger.

Whats the AHers thoughts on this?

It reminds me of when some people got their backs up about the fact that Quentin Tarantino uses the word 'n*gger' so much in his films cos he's a white guy. PC bull****. It's a movie, and it's supposed to be a reflection of real life. Believe it or not, some stupid f*cking people used to name their dogs 'N*gger' (some probably still do). Yes, it's offensive, but it's a fact. It's history, it's not as though the director is sticking it in there for the craic cos he's a massive racist. People need to get a grip. They should leave the name in, let people be offended like they should be, and move on. It's a piece of art, and the best art is supposed to be realistic. The reality is some people are racists - who'd have thunk it??!

One day as I sat reading my newspaper my 3 year old was watching a film.
I was aghast to hear one of the characters was called Tinker Bell.
To protect her against becoming a person who would alienate an ethnic group of people I switched off the film and banned her from watching it again.
Anyway, I doubt there is much resemblance between her character, a young female being dressed in luminous, scantly tight fitting attire, but to protect those on the fringes of society I decided my action was appropriate until such time they change her name.

N*gger was used in Britain up until the 1950s to describe a fabric colour, although they usually said n*gger brown to describe a shade of brown.

The name of the dog is a side issue and not one that actually does anything to enhance the film. I would contend that someone calling a dog ****** back in the forties would be more a case of uninformed ignorance without any malicious intent or real racist motivation while somebody calling a dog that in 2011 would be doing so to cause offense knowing the feeling it provokes in the black community. The significance of words changes as time passes and in this case it has taken on a much more offensive meaning to people. All it would do in this film would be to act as a distraction and cause an unnecessary debate. I can understand the film makers desire to change a pretty insignificant detail like this when it is not going to have a major impact on what is going to happen in the rest of the film.

The film should reflect the racism that was prevelant at the time, The dogs name should be Ni*ger as it originaly was and everyone should take offence to it and still watch the movie.

Was "******" actually a racist word at the time, though? Or was it just a neutral descriptor which could be applied in either a racist or non-racist context depending on the intent of the user?

I believe, for example, that "Oriental" is still a fairly acceptable term in Ireland. Is it racist? Try saying it in San Francisco.

[Edit: Sunova... The frigging anti-offence filter on boards can't even allow an etymological discussion on the word. Heaven forbid someone might see it an take offence at the word and not the intent behind it]

When I was growing up most people with a black dog called it 'blackie' or 'Nigger', thats how it was.

People used to also call Velcro 'niggers hair'.

Kiwi polish also produced a polish called 'Negro'.

But things are different now, tbh I think its fair enough to change the dogs name in the movies remake - whats the point in offending someone when it can be avoided?.

The dog was Guy Gibson's, and also the squadron's mascott for a time, that's why they used it, not because he was dead.
