What is with people's obsession with the word 'begrudgery' on this forum?

Ever other thread contains something about Irish people being begrudgers, or the begrudgery of this country, and if you make any sort negative comment about a famous person, of course you are a begrudger.

That word is eventually just gonna lose all meaning with the way people are just throwing it around the place.

(I forsee myself being called a begrudger in one of the first posts on this!

)

There are always "fad" words and phrases that people misuse to justify their stances and dismiss dissenters off-hand.

Begrudgery is the latest one trotted out by the Jedward fan club.

Last year's one was FF's "we all".

"Populist" is another favourite, meaning "reflecting popular opinion", but turned into a dismissive slur.

Marketing has managed to turn the word "cheap" into a dirty word (you could say they've "cheapened" it), even though it should mean "value for money".

Misuse of language in an attempt to make the incorrect usage the "accepted norm" is a common tactic.

One which should be challenged at every opportunity.

If you have an opinion that differs from that of the borg then you are a begrudger.. That seems to be the way. For instance if you don't agree with the worship of St Obama you are a begrudger, you are raining on the borgs parade. Same thing if you were not in awe of a rich old lady in a silly hat.

The use of the words Begrudger and West Brit show you have no debate skills. You know quite well what type of individual you are dealing with when you see those words. I would have them down with people that say stuff like "You're watching too much fox news/sky news/sky sports" as a some sort of debate.

Its overuse is disappointing as I think begrudgery is a recognisable aspect of Irish society, though its not as prevalent as some people make it out to be.
Unfortunately, calling anyone who doesn't like something that lots of other people like a begrudger makes it difficult to discuss the fact that sometimes in Ireland people do automatically dislike something/someone successful or popular.

Agreed. It's like those idiots that use the words 'left-wing' or 'liberal' as if they are some kind of insult. Usually preceded by 'loony' or 'bleeding heart' for added moranity.

Fiachra's Law. A version of Godwin's Law except based on Irishness and Begrudgery:

"As an online discussion on all things Irish grows longer, the probability of the mention of Typical Irish Begrudgery approaches 1."

In other words, given enough time, all discussions on things Irish —regardless of topic or scope—inevitably end up being about Typical Irish Begrudgery.

Fiachra's law is here to protect us from accusations of begrudgery. When you express an opinion that runs contrary to someone else's and they use they 'B' word, invoke Fiachra's law with great aplomb.

B: No, they're sh¡te
A: Typical Irish Begrudery!
B: I invoke FIACHRA'S LAW!…

Essentially Fiachra's law is there to stop anyone accusing you of begrudgery and therefore claiming some sort of moral superiority in an online argument. The first thing that happens after some one calls you a begrudger is that you have to defend yourself against the claim and appear to lose credibility in the argument. Fiachra's law basically says the person throwing out the begrudger claim is taking a cheap shot because they know they have no other defence and making all subsequent debate redundant because they don't have the brains to have a logical discussion on differing points of view.

Begrudgery is an irish trait. It will continue to be used alot round these parts simply because there are lots or begrudgers and begrudging posts to be found.

England has it too.... i remember liam gallagher saying something along the lines of "if a band gets up in their local pub in america they get cheered on, but if a band gets up to play in their local pub in england people say who the **** let them on stage".

Begrudgery might (might) be more common in Irish society than others, but that doesn't make it an exclusively Irish trait - it's a human one. And yeah, a begrudger here is usually someone that doesn't like the same stuff that lots of people like. I take it those who throw out the word so easily though obviously don't dislike anything themselves - because after all, that would make them a begrudger too... which I'm sure they don't see themselves as.

I was going to compare the frequent use of 'begrudgery' to Godwin's law too. The post of the day is a prime example. I haven't read the thread in question, but why can't someone complain about something without being accused of negativity and (incorrectly,) begrudgery. The world isn't all sunshine and rainbows - why shouldn't we ****ing complain?

But that's kinda the problem.....how to identify the actual begrudgers versus those of us who have been repeatedly falsely accused of it.

Basically, some [many?] people don't know the meaning of the word, and they still use it.

It's not so much the negative comments tbh. The problem is there are some who just cannot abide anything that makes people enjoy themselves at the moment. They tell you are fawning or over doing it and insist you remember the country is a mess and therefore you should not be enjoying yourself too much.

And frankly it gets tedious after a while.

True. But neither is it all doom and gloom as some seem to insist. There has to be a happy medium.
