I'd say the most immediate effect could be some changes to the Obama itinery. He is due here in 3 weeks. Wonder if he will make a stop that is not of any real political need.

You can guarantee the same people involved in putting together and carrying out the Op to kill Bin Laden were still doing the same job when Bush was in office.

This isn't an Obama/Bush thing. You can guarantee that for the ISI to give OBL up, either the boots on the ground either got completely concrete proof that OBL was living there or something big went on behind closed doors between the US and the ISI.

As I said in the AH thread I fail to understand why the US forces could not have made a concerted effort to capture Bin Laden rather than carry out what appears to be a execution operation. If the US wanted to show the world that it behaves in a different manner than the terrorists that it rails against then this would have been the opportunity.

Instead they have given this vile man the heroes death that he must have longed for and the so called Jihad fresh oxygen to recruit a new generation of disillusioned to carry out acts of violence against innocent civilians (probably in their own countries). Surely it would have been preferable to let this man rot for years in a cell following a trial for the crimes that he was responsible for.

I hope that this does not act as a catalyst for acts of murder against innocents in any country but the cynic in me feels that it will.

In all fairness, nobody on here knows what went on during that Op or what went on when they faced him.

I highly doubt OBL would've allowed himself be taken alive. Though when they found him, he was doing his best impression of a coward, hiding behind a human shield, he'd never allow himself go into custody.

Well they say the Navy Seals gave Bin Laden the opportunity to surrender but regardless of how true that is does anyone actually believe Ozzys Bin Liner would be willing to be paraded as a prisoner? Equally I don't think the Yanks would want him alive as he would be a focal point of far greater power behind US bars.

Osama has been imho largely irrelevant for a while now. He wanted to create a mass movement, but he failed. Instead we have the Arab spring of largely peaceful protests taking down the dictators, that Osama wanted to get rid of. His death is just the final part of his utter failure to achieve any of his objectives.

The election is still 18 months away, which is an eternity in politics. I think his re-election (if it happens) will have more to do with the ineptness of Republicans than anything Obama does specifically.

Well common sense tells me its a rather large risk Obama is taking by lying that he's dead, because if he isn't, then a future video featuring Osama + that days newspaper is really gonna ruin his reelection chances

So can we expect the Americans to go home now from these area's?

Or, more likely, will we see them stay in these places long term fighting locals who are labelled as 'terrorists' whilst propping up puppet governments? Will they in fact ever leave these countries? somehow i doubt it.
