Moving to Galway, working in Tuam

Hi,

Just been offered a job in Tuam and was think about living in Galway city. I prefer more urban settings and was thinking Tuam may be too quite/small. I'm just wondering what the best areas to consider would be. I'm thinking somewhere between Oranmore and Renmore.
Would the morning/evening commute to Tuam be a nightmare? How long would it take?
I'd be grateful for any recommendations/suggestions!

Whatever else you do in your entire life, don't live in tuam.

Oranmore's a nice village, close to Galway. best choice, drive wise.

Well I know when I've done my travels and have seen the world, Tuam will be where I will always come back to settle in.

Traffic is an absolute bitch between Tuam and Galway. Maybe the Tuam side of Claregalway would suit ya so then you won't have to trawl through the Claregalway traffic. Although, I can't see what Claregalway has that Tuam doesn't...

I would not recommend moving to Tuam. If you were born a Sham you will love it. I know a lot of people who moved there and just cannot get use to it. If you move to anywhere on the eastside of Galway City you will be going against the traffic if you work days. Turning right in Claregalway from Oranmore can be a pain. Costs of fuel must be considered.

As per the other posters comment. I'd live the Tuam side of ClareGalway..traffic is awful

well if you live in Galway and travel to Tuam for work at 'normal' business hours, you'll be going against the flow, and should be alright!
Living in Tuam and working in Galway is a different story though - you don't want to be stuck in that traffic every day...;-)

The lifestyle you want to pursue should have a large influence on where you decide to reside.
Your starting/finishing time at work could be convenient for availing of public transport & burkes busses.
Rent & house prices are far greater in Galway than Tuam.
Sports facilities in Tuam are excellent with rugby, gaelic football, hurling, golf, swimming and a selection of soccer clubs to choose from, to name but a few.
The arts are well catered for, as is the music scene in local pubs.
Education facilities are plentiful and excellent.
The town park is scenic and peaceful and has a good childrens playground as well as pathways for walking, exercising.
When the Big Dig is complete in a few months from now, the infrastructural services will be second to none.
The excavation for a new inner relief road and an outer bypass is about to commence.
I could go on and on but if you want more detail or a guided tour, i'm sure a member of the town council or chamber of commerce would be more than happy to assist you, just google Tuam Guide for contact details.

I thought the inner relief road was not going ahead because of the inability to relocate the tennis courts...?
I would be very sceptical regarding the bypass also.. Tuam bypass has only been mentioned as a stand alone project because the Gort-Tuam motorway is not going ahead due to lack of funding. The Goverment is waiting 6 months before deciding on allocation of motorway funds.

If the Tuam bypass does go ahead it could be 3 or 4 years before its in use.. Remember how many false promises Loughrea were given before they got the go ahead...

Regarding the inner relief road, the townspeople persuaded the town council to retain the size of the park as it now is.
A place will be found for new tennis courts, but not at the expence of the towns most treasured amenity, ie the park.
And rightly so.

Regarding the outer bypass, newspapers this week reported that it is definitely going ahead, as is the Claregalway one.
It appears the government accepts that Tuam & Claregalway are the major bottlenecks on the western seaboard north-south route and funding has been ring-fenced for the projects, regardless of whether the Gort-Tuam corridor proceeds.

Tuam has almost everything you need. It's major downfall is the traffic and the big dig.

What's with all the Anti Tuam stuff? It's a mid sized town, no different to any other town.

I live in Oranmore now, my girlfriend works in Tuam. She works at 8:30, for that she leaves Oranmore at 7:45 and is never late. She Finishes work at 5:30 and is back in Oranmore drinking tea made by Yours Truly at 18:10!

Driving to Tuam, you are going against the flow.

Oranmore is a nice Village with the worst parking problem I've every seen, people park anywhere there. Two gyms, one is waste of space and the other is only mediocre. It's got 2 good supermarkets, small cinema, an Xtravision, few pubs etc. and is 7 mins drive to Galway city. Rent is much cheaper compared to Galway city. You've rent an Towhouse for the price of a room in the city.

If you want to live in Galway so you can go out socialising easily, then I'd avoid Oranmore or Claregalway (the other Galway commuter village on the Tuam side), because of the poor night and weekend public transport. If this matters to you, I'd recommend Doughiksa, Roscam, which have excellent (by Irish standards) public transport to the city and easy access to the dual-carriageway. Going to work,once on it you'll be going against the major traffic each time.
