Are hairy Molly's extinct?

Does anyone remember hairy mollys, those furry black caterpillars. There used to be loads of them around when i was a child, but it must be 20 years since I've seen one. What's that all about???

Ya know OP I've wondered this for many a year now! we used to call them hairy mollys/hairy jennys and they were always around when I was growing up, used to capture them and keep them in a container for a while and feed them lettuce. I never ever see them anymore, it's very strange altogether. Last time I saw one was in Italy!

No I definitely dont think that's the reason, they are just way more scarce for sure. You wouldn't have to search for them normally, they'd be outside the front door and on the walls of the house outside.

A lot of them have been killed off by spreading liquid slurry (as opposed to well rotted manure) and other industrial farming methods. In cities the amount of artificial fertilisers, weedkillers, slug pellets and so on that are used in gardens has also helped to reduce numbers.

Same goes for Ladybirds, a lot less of them than there were 30 years ago.
