LOL. Do you LOL and not mean it??

I have noticed lately mostly on Facebook and here people saying LOL at the end of every sentence or comment.

I thought LOL meant laugh out loud but people just seem to say it anyway for no reason.

I have seen posts in Motors saying stuff like my engine went bang today LOL. How much will that cost LOL???

Are they really lolling or are they just langers???

I hate this acceptance of using lol as some sort of punctuation and gap filler. i mean if you don't know what to say, don't say anything. here's an example of a conversation with the lol logic:

person A: jeez i really like surfing the internet
person B: beans

*here lol has been replaced with something equally unrelated. you sound like a fool! stop it stop it stop it!

LOL predates texting too. It was around first when chatrooms were at their most popular and you had to type quickly to get your point across. Then texting became extremely popular and it just solidified it into our culture, to the extent that it's now in effin' dictionaries. I find that I rarely use it.

A good mate of mine ran a forum a few years back in the early days of same and it was very moderator lite, so it could get a tad out there at times, but he hated "LOL" with a passion(rightfully). So he, being a programmer techie type, fiddled with the code so anytime someone typed "LOL" it would display "I'm a fúcking retard" in the actual post. Sorted that LOL meme out real quick by training said retards. Negative reinforcement and all that.

Though it did amaze me how slow some were to cop the connection. IIRC if you typed "your ma" he would come around to your house and personally kick you square in the face.

lol alot of ppl type like dis lol they dont use ful stops or capetal letters lol for sum reason these ppl find it easier to write lol at teh end of every centince than to use a ful stop lol pmsl

I'm constantly amazed by the things that irritate people. I do use LOL but only when I'm saying something that may be misconstrued or heaven forbid when I genuinely laugh out loud. It's sometimes hard to convey an emotion in type and a LOL or ;-) can assist with the sentiment. I'm not against adding words like this to the dictionary - it's the evolution of language whether you like it or not - as long as they don't start removing words because they're not modern or popular then where is the harm. If they didn't add words to the dictionary we'd all still be saying foresooth and whereart thou.

OMG was used quite often in the 19th Century in written word. There are many personal letters that have been found which show that it's usage was quite common. It fell out of use for a long time & has recently come back into the language in both spoken & written word.

I'm not a fan of either expression, but I do love the fact that new words enter the dictionary on a regular basis. It shows that a language is alive & evolving, even if some of the new words are, well, retarded.

Agreed.

I loved that 'meh' entered the dictionary, it's a great, descriptive word, IMO.
