Have you ever brought someone around to your way of thinking

Just the last night I was chatting to a big group of girls, one was after getting engaged to one of my best friends and had the diamond.
Now I obviously waited until she left because it might have seemed I was being sh*tty otherwise but I started talking about diamonds and their artificially inflated value and the fact that thousands toil in what is often slave labour so that we can enjoy what is essentially a rock and one that carries a status and more importantly a commmitment. Though this thread ain't about diamonds, I think we may have had one of those recently enough.

I don't like the idea of diamonds and all the etc etc, and I tried to explain this. The fact it was a few hours into a big meetup on paddys and the fact that the girls had just been complimenting a new engagemnet ring meant it probably wasn't an ideal time to try to bring anyone around to my pov but the question is, have you ever changed someones opinon on something?

Did it take much work and, more importantly, was it worth it?

Tbh, even though I'm not mad on diamonds I'd probably still buy one for someone if the really wanted it. I might disagree with it it but if someone you care about doesn't there's no reason to be so obtuse, that may make you a pain in the arse

Well I did in debates in school, as I used to do them a lot, cough. Always discussed things like prisoners voting, hunting, aboortion etc etc blah in college all night with my friends, some would sway, most would not.

Got a few pms here saying things like they were becoming vegetarian because of some threads and debates etc, always nice, even if some didn't in the end.

I convinced a mate of mine not to buy a house in 2005, he was all set, had deposit ready, viewed one house a few times and was talking to me about offers to make. I rationally explained why i thought it was a bad idea and i really couldn't believe when he decided to wait it out. (it was made all the easier because he was looking at crappy houses in terrible areas for stupid money, i wasn't predicting the bubble bursting, i just knew a bad deal when i seen it). He bought in 2009 and it worked out well for him, he never thanked me and i dont know if my "talk" changed his mind, but he's has said about how stupid he was to even consider buying in 2005.

Just thougt of one I'm rather proud of. One of the lads who is none to academic thought reading rather boring but we were on a long drive, I'm talking over a week through a desert, and got him to read Ronan O'Gara's book whcih was a good read. His next was Wild Swans which is huge and one of my favourites. Next book was High Socirty by Ben Elton (which suited hom to a tee)

I think the best you can do is introduce new facts and POV's. If somebody is wiling to consider them, all well and good. If they aren't, well.............

Tbh, no one person should be responsible for a change of belief.

If you talk about stuff with reasonable people that listen to logic then it's not that hard. For example, your anti-diamond argument seems pretty hard to oppose.

I think After Hours would be a funnier and more interesting place if people stopped trying to bring others to their line of thinking by mistaking AH for a place of serious debate and not of taking the p*ss.

The thing about diamonds is that they arent rare at all. They're fairly common. Gold on the other hand is relatively rare and has a wide range of applications, so its value is somewhat justified.
