Should shinners apologise for backing Hitler

We constantly hear Shinners demanding that the Brits apologise for this or that but I have never heard them apologise for supporting Hitler in WW2 .

I really don't see why this is such a big deal one way or the other; the enemy of my enemy is my friend.

As others have posted, there was a lot of gutless British positioning in the thirties, including (I vaguely recall) something to do with the "Queen Mother" wanting to cut a deal with the Nazis. Noxious old windbag.

Anyway, much of that gutlessness was probably to do with the scars from WWI and wanting to avoid another huge conflict. Where was Captain Hindsight when we needed him?

What a lot of people seem to forget is that the World largely backed Hitler at the very beginning. As a poster has previous pointed out - he was voted "Man of the Year" once by Time Magazine and the Olympics were also held there.

It's all the benefit of hindsight.

O' Duffy going to Spain is possibly one of the funniest war stories I've ever heard - is it true that when they got to Spain, nobody told Franco they were coming and so they were opened fire upon by the people they were coming to help? And they also supposedly came back with more people than they left with, because a lot of locals threw on blue shirts and joined them?

I don't know how true any of this is, but it was a great story my History teacher told me in secondary school.

@fehenry - the man they're referring to is Adolf Hitler and was voted Man of the Year by Time Magazine.

1. In fact, the British Free Corps was created by John Amery, the son of the British Conservative cabinet minister Leo Amery and brother of Conservative cabinet minister Julian Amery, who was sympathetic to Nazi Germany. Why have you left that out? Furthermore, because they were prisoners of war does not mean they were forced to join the British unit of the Waffen-SS. They all volunteered. Volunteered. The key point in this thread, however, is that substantially more British people volunteered for the British unit of the Waffen-SS than IRA men who collaborated with the Nazis. In fact, we can name all three IRA men: the (Protestant) Australian writer Francis Stuart, Seán Russell and Frank Ryan. Thread fail - major thread fail.

3. After WWII very many British people had a vested interest in denying the widespread pre-war sympathy for Nazism and fascism in Britain. Wiping that from the British historical record has been the great revisionism. Alas, it seems that some British people are still in denial and making excuses for those who collaborated.

Not saying I agree with Seanchai but he is posting plenty of facts too. These fucking threads. I'm not patriotic/nationalistic, I despise republican violence, some of the nicest people I've met are unionists, I find hatred of the British laughably pathetic, I love countless things about Britain/the British - but I can hold the above position without being an Irish "Uncle Tom", the way some folks here carry on (it's sometimes as bad as the 800 years sh1t - an inferiority complex is an inferiority complex)...
