It is an unfortunate fact but retailers will have to look at having genuine reductions. The quality of Dunnes Stores, Penneys and now Tesco clothing means that charging €30++ for a t-shirt etc is a waste of time. The consumer does not have the money any more. As to eating out .... only Milano's seem to be active in offering 'deals'. (Actually BurgerKing so as well...credit where it is due!!). ...we will all have to accept that hard times are here and money is tight!! I don't agree with Sandwich boards- they are a nuisance on a footpath and a danger as well. Why not use 'Chalk Boards' on the front entrance etc to attract custom - but put your best genuine offer on it and make it enticing to get customers in.

I am Pat H and I was a 50% shareholder and the manager of Urban and as someone who has had a business in Killarney for 8 years imo the problems of the town have a lot more to do with advertising. Killarney is no longer an option for the majority of Kerry people as a shopping destination and this is because the town does not offer the choice of shops to attract the comsumer.:mad: One has to remember that the town is controlled by 4-5 families and their agents.eg solicitor/auctioneer and to deal with these people you had to be within the loop.:( Solicitors in this Town respect a Murderer/Rapist more than they do of a Tennant who is trying their best to pay rent /rates etc Take for example PQ. He already had "tourist" shops but in order to keep the rest of us retailers out he offered higher rents than anyone else so Landlords/Agents would offer him first choice while other landlords were saying "if A can get that,I want it" "Noticed this evening skelligs chocolate cafe never came back, despite advertising re opening in dec then again in jan. Just been by there, stripped clean" There is no possible way that they can afford the rent of around 40-50K per year plus all the charges. What gets me is this constant signage 'Closing Down Sale' as a desperate means of getting people into the shop and then everything at full price!!! It is an unfortunate fact but retailers will have to look at having genuine reductions. The quality of Dunnes Stores, Penneys and now Tesco clothing means that charging €30++ for a t-shirt etc is a waste of time. The consumer does not have the money any more. We sold tee shirts for 14.99 up to 29.99 at normal price, Had jeans for 24.99 to 59.99 normal price but the customer used their option not to come to us and that is the customers right BUT if we as locals of Killarney want the Town to thrive we have a choice to make. Will we buy our products of the local supplier or go out to "little england" and leave the town centre disintigrate.I'm not standing up for the Banks btw - they gave out the loans but I've seen some staff get heckled lately and it disgusts me - they were doing their job, trying to achieve targets set out by top brass, they're the ones who need to be asked serious questions. They all got bonuses and are the managers of the future and need to be reminded of the damage which they inflicted on Ireland. As for the Town Councillors Well enough said Sorry about the rant and will have a lot more to say in the future
Masala wrote: » and again not to hijack the thread....I can see that there a lot of Self-Employed on this thread - but the PAYE man is getting really screwed over. I appreciate that we should all shop local...but circumstances have changed and money is tight. Not wanting to whinge on the point but IS THERE ANYONE RUNNING THE COUNTRY???? Does the Government not realise that everything is going UP in price and no-one seems to have control over them Coming up for me in the next few months - Petrol increase, VHI increase, Car Insurance (I expect), House Insurance (guaranteed), College Fees Increase. Came home today for lunch and find letter from Mortgage Bank that my mortgage is going up €30 a month. Where am I to fund these increase when the Government is screwing me on my take-home. So I must look after myself and get the best value for my buck. I must shop around and if it is cheaper on the internet, in Tralee or on ebay- then that its where I must buy it from. I am afraid that there is worse to come as far as i can predict and there will be more problems in the retail/entertainment/holiday etc sectors as people have to cut back to bare essentials from now on.
newman10 wrote: » We all got screwed around. Without the person who started as Self Employed, the company which now employs the PAYE worker would not exist. No I am not saying that we should shop local but we had better think about where we spend out Euro because I would prefer to live in a country whereby we have thriving local economies rather than the UK/USA models of sprawl. Are we buying Dunnes/Tesco/SuperValue milk which may come from Tyrone or Armagh and the wonder why Kerry group want to sell its milk division and then wonder why someplace has closed. To survive this recession imo we have to look to our own. Be part of the community not be of a community. Everyone is struggling but it is us who will determine who will survive

The plan is to give live updates every hour on the half hour. If your interested in the count then feel free to check it out. At the moment it is just a basic one page site, but all going well we hope to expand on it in the future. It is sponsored my the Killarney Advertiser and MD O'Sheas who have both been very generous in their support. The site will be live all day long, and can be accessed by both PC & Laptop, unfortunately smart phones that do not have flash enabled will not be able to see the feed. I am aware that iPhone users who have the Skyfire app installed will be able to watch the feed but quality can not be guaranteed. thanks guys

From a killarney standpoint would you say its a reasonable outcome given what was on offer? Would young griffin be good for killarney? Also, healyrae has basically been saying 'just give me a chance'. fleming will perhaps be interesting having turned his back on ff to go solo.
