They are allies with most of the dictators in the oil rich region so they turn a blind eye when something does not suit them. Gaddafi is not Mubarak. Gaddafi and the US hate each other. Regan even bombed Libya in 86 and Gadaffi was behind many terrorist attacks on the US including the Lockerbie bombing in which many US citizens were killed. The US has condemned the violence and is probably going to support sanctions in the UNSC. What more can they really do short of declaring war?

The UN isn't useless and the US has no more power then any other security council member like the UK.

Perhaps they're learning from the mistakes of previous administrations and not just going to launch themselves into something that, in reality, is none of their business.

Obviously the international community should be whatever they can to stop what's going on, but it's not for America to make unilateral decisions.

Why would they string him up? They support him now. They only vilified him when he refused to open up his economy to US markets (like Iran, North Korea and Venezuela) in the 1980's. But since then Clinton got him to let US companies into Libya so now they love him even if he is still a brutal bastard who crushes his people.

Cut the bullsh** do you think invading Afghanistan or Iraq actually made them any money? If they went in and took out Gaddafi they'd unite the middle east and north africa against them. Not to mention play into the hands of Islamic extremists who are looking to take power in Libya. Letting things ride for the minute is the smart move.

Well considering Libya is the 12th largest oil producer in the world at the moment, producing light sweet crude which is apparently the most valuable kind. Also much of Libya still needs to be explored for oil so the true extent of their resources is expected to be enormous. I would think that would be a good enough incentive for anyone.

Gaddafi has been rather well behaved since the USA put a cruise missile through his window in April 1986. I would never consider him to be an ally.

As a matter of fact American's are not even allowed/welcome to enter Libya, but I guess the facts kind of get in the way of generalizations.

1. Libya is the twelfth largest oil producing country worldwide with most of their oil produce being the lighter shorter chain molecules which have the greatest demand and economic return so they would be a viable country to invade for oil.

2. The west doesn't like Gaddafi, he's been responsible for a lot of crap including funding the Black September Movement, supporting the PLO, providing arms to the PIRA and being pretty close to the Soviets during the Cold war. He hasn't done much in the previous 2 decades to warm relations either, he's still viewed as a leader to be wary of.

3. America is currently tied up in Afghanistan and Iraq which they're trying to pull out of essentially, considering Obama's policy on war how do you think the American public will respond to another war / invasion? Considering there's been just short of 6,000 American military deaths in Iraq / Afghanistan do you think the Americans want to rush into another war.

4. America has lost enough support worldwide with it's actions in Iraq / Afghanistan, another war will hurt their support yet again. Not to mention invading Libya will be another propoganda victory for Islamic fundamentalists meaning waves of new recruits. Last thing the west needs.

So ye, there's plenty of reasons why America wont invade Libya, do a bit of research next time, it's not hard.

The US are keeping shtum on this because they don't know what to say or do. They can't come out and denounce him because they support him and have done so for the last decade. They can't voice support for him because that would fly in the face of all the bullsh1t they always spout about democracy and liberty and all that other freedom hogwash.
