Runners at a wedding

My friends wedding is in a few weeks, all looking forward to it. Should be a good day. Another friend of mine who will be at the wedding too, told me he'd be wearing runners to the wedding. Now, we're in our late twenties and I dont think I've ever seen this fella dressing smart for anything. I saw him at his uncles funeral, carrying the coffin, with a hoodie, jeans and runners on him.
So anyway, i said to him ''what the fúck are you wearing runners to the wedding for? Its not a teenage disco or anything. If you turned up in runners for my wedding, i'd tell you to go home''
He says, "sure i hate wearing shoes, i'd be more comfortable in the runners"
I just left it so after that, because i knew i'd just be banging my head against a brick wall.
Have you ever worn, or have you ever seen anyone wear runners at a wedding ?

depends what you mean by "runners". If its nike/adidas running shoes, then no no no. If its clean skate shoes, with a trendy suit, it can be done quite well. At my friends wedding a few months back, we compromised, wore shoes with the suits for the wedding and meal, then changed into skate shoes for the afters (more comfortable for longer dancing!!)

The bride and groom may/may not give a fiddlers if he shows up wearing runners and I doubt it's going to spoil the big event .But I just imagine the majority of men if you were to ask would just not be comfortable themselfs wearing runners with suit at wedding and I think that's all the non runner posters are saying here .

Find that somewhat hard to believe. You'd stick out like a sore thumb (Unless wearing all black runners)

I'm amazed it's even up for discussion like it's all about 'dressing for the occasion '' To save any possible embarrassment he could ask the friends of a friend for advice and if they say 'hey it's cool ,then there is no problem '' ?

What kind of wedding do you go to? The ones I've been to the guests usually clear out long before this part of the evening and I'm sure by the time it arrives the bride and groom will be busy doing other things than worrying about footwear, unless their into that sort of thing....

He could mean he'd be more 'comfortable', not in the physical sense, but in the sense that he didn't feel compelled to conform to wearing what every other judgemental tool deems as acceptable.

OP asked if we knew anybody who had wore runners at a wedding and just as somebody might ask in the fashion or ladies lounge what is /isin't /might pass for a faux pas at a social occasion ? people were giving their opinions ,a cross section which was to be expected , and nothing personell towards the runner guy .

The guy will just look like an idiot at the wedding. If comfort is his reason he really is a lazy bàstard.
I'd tell him that he's expected to dress well, do it out of respect for his friends and runners are likely to be offensive to the couple, especially the bride.

Although I don't really get the whole runners at formal occasions thing. Is it a way to show the person is alternative or doesn't conform like the rest of the sheep? I never understood it tbh.
