My father, god love him, is in the habit of ironing what little money he has these days to make the notes nice and crisp. Whatever the reason, we never really thought much of it.

Until he burned a hundred euros worth of notes.

What I'm wondering is, do you post them off to the mint or will a bank take and exchange them?

Once you have more than half of the note the banks etc should still take them. Something similar happened to me in college. Class rep was organising a mystery tour. Everyone (about 50 of us) paid him 40 euro to book the bus, venue etc. He left the money in his lampshade thinking it was a great place to hide it(you can see where this is going!). He came home after college to find the money had all completely burnt. He ended up having to pay for the tour out of his own pocket :rolleyes:

Ah yeah, they're more... discoloured and super crispy than holes burnt or anything. Serial numbers are clear, watermark and metal thing still on them. Just the fivers look dirt brown. Tenners are now kind of purple etc.

Sounds like we're clear!

Banks will still take it once it's checkable that it is not a forgery.

It'll just be remitted as soiled. Happens all the time. Usually its post men who find damp moldy notes' behind the sofa '

As far as I know, the bank can take them - might have to ask for the bank manager... Heard a similar story years ago about a woman who had a load of notes kept in a tight roll inside a cigar tin - had the tin open when heard neighbour coming in, so slapped the lid on it and popped it into the nearest place out of sight... the range oven!!! Forgot all about until a few hours later - took out a red-hot tin to see blackened charred notes inside. Off to bank, where the manager used a tweezers to pull them out one-by-one and noted the serial number of each before they fell into black dust and were brushed into the bin. The woman then got credit for the money (and I presume the bank manager submitted a report to the Central Bank who approved it).

Once you have over 51% of the note they will give you its value in the US Treasury anyways, there was a programme on Sky one time about it. The best was a load of termites who got at someones stash.

If it was 1 hundred euro note, grand. But you mentioned fives, did he do them one at a time, burn it, and keep going?

Ha ha, did almost the same. I was looking for a place to hide money in a flat after the previous place I was in was broken into and all the cash in the flat was nicked. I stuffed a wad of money amounting to about £200 in a desk lamp shade that I never used....until I used it.
I put on the lamp, wandered into the kitchen to make a cup of tea and then got distracted watching something on the tv. It was the smell of burning paper that got my attention and suddenly I realised what I had done.
I brought the semi burnt roll into the central bank, when the girl filling out the form asked what happened I proceeded to tell her the story, getting slightly embarrassed at my own stupidity. She then called all the others in the office over to her window and got me to repeat the story while they all pissed them selves laughing.

I got a cheque from the central bank a few weeks later for the full amount, and a note to say they could identify all the notes.

Nevore, my mam created a black bag tunnel to put on our washing line so that when it rains she can just go out and pull the bag across the line and stop the washing getting wet, now I think that just proves she's a genius but it's still embarrassing when someone asks what's that on the line? So I feel your pain. Also my father likes to iron socks "because it's easy", no other reason. I think it's down to them getting old enough to just not give a crap what anyone thinks. Fair play I say
