Is anyone here using TinyXP? After reading the following articles I wanted to give it a go, looks really interesting. Basically someone took XP, made thousandas of rewgistry changed, fixed a load of things and stripped out some bloat, and made it into a better XP essentially.

I installed it on one of my friends pc's and I was pretty amazed and just how fast it was. However a few days later he started to have problems. The pc would randomly shut down and then he could not get his keyboard to work - a few more random problems.

So I want to try it but not if this is the norm. Is anyone here using it?

I use it in virtualbox on Ubuntu on my netbook so I can remote desktop to my main pc, its designed for virtualisation not everyday use as its completely stripped down

Only bad thing is that this is a dying OS. If you really want a tiny os, go for TinyOS or a Linux system with embedded verions glibc/standard libraries. TinyXP = Tiny me bollox:D

Both me and a friend used it before. It worked most of the times but every so often I'd have weird problems or find some limitation of it that I didn't like so I just got rid of it. My friend did too.

Why not just use rdesktop locally on your Ubuntu machine if you want to access the other machine remotely?

To use an expression, I wouldn't touch it with yours, mate.

It's an n-2 revision of an operating system family known to have lots of bloat and inherited code issues, where even the most knowing experts don't quite know everything about it. If you want a better-performing OS on hardware that can't/won't run Vista or Win7, you should probably consider some of the more user-friendly Linux distros out there.

If you absolutely have to have it be based on XP, download TweakUI from the Microsoft XP Powertoys page and create your own cut-down version of XP. It's more work, sure, but you also know that you haven't lost services that you need - and that you don't have malware floating around within your OS.

The worst thing I found about it is that there was no default print spooler! Can't really call it a desktop OS if it can't even print:pac:

@Fysh - For Windows, I found nlite is probably the best solution for stripping down Windows OS's. Sure, it requires a reinstall, but it's a great piece of software imo.

I didn't even run into that issue. That seems like an odd omission. I understand it's meant to be a lite version of xp but I can't imagine the print spooler was that much of a resource hog.

Must have been the build I was using. It didn't have printing though which was very strange. As you said, it uses very little ram(around 4 megs) so I don't see the issue.
I would imagine you would run into quite a number of obscure errors using TinyXP though. Mind you, most places still use bog standard XP for most of their client machines.

Best just stick with XP which is Microsoft supported. Who supports TinyXP fixes? Nothing worse than a broken, unsupported release.

I probably should have clarified that a bit better. The reason I didn't run into that issue was because I never used that computer for printing.

. You're right, of course - TweakUI is grand for making certain changes easier, but Nlite's your only man if you want to actually cut stuff out of your install media...

Iced/drip coffee ftw. Ahem. Onto more pressing issues, TweakUI appears to be decent. I forgot the name, but there is also a feature in PowerToys that gives you multiple desktops. It's a shame that some of these third party tools are not given more attention.

There's a multiple-desktops powertoy, but I've found that desktops is better - less of an overhead, plus it works on XP, Vista and 7. The original release was a bit wobbly when initialising the additional desktop environments, but the current version is excellent.
