Does Karma Exist?

Mods feel free to move this thread if it's in the wrong place but I feel like it is a personal issue for me.

Okay so, I will get straight to the point and ask the most important question that I have at the moment. Does Karma exist? I mean if someone does something bad to you or others does it come back to them (or vice versa)?

The reason I ask this is because I split from my OH (many months ago) and she has been spreading the most horrendous/private of stuff around about me up to this day. But she is doing it in a way that does not make her look like she is being petty (if you get what I mean)... although I don't like my personal circumstances (during my upbringing) to be broadcasted to the world.

Anyways, I feel like I can handle this (by ignoring it and moving on with my life) but I keep thinking does karma actual exist or is it a fanciful notion that people have to make themselves feel better when someone does something wrong (that they can't do anything about).

IMO, no, Karma does not exist!

bad stuff happens to people, good stuff happens to people, but it's all coincidence. There is no connection between the 2.

Ever notice that some people seem to have it really good and some tend to have it really bad? (i'm talking extremes here).

Sorry to hear about your situation too OP! But rest assured, the type of person who would do that to someone will bring bad stuff on herself anyway, whether Karma is involved or not.

What do you mean by karma?

The what comes around goes around touted by new age writers or the actual balancing of Karma and Dharma as described in the Vedic texts?

There's no such thing as karma beyond you act badly to people they typically react negatively back, its not science.
As for random good fortunes or misfortunes happening to people, they remain just that random.

That said people who aggressively seek what they want are more likely to get it than the 'nice' people who don't.

If you mean karma as in will she get some retribution for this -no she wont.

It will probably affect her relatiionships with others. People don't like this type of stuff about others private lives and in most cases do not want to know.

People are not foolish and most can recognise this type of behaviour. The upshot of it may be that she comes accross as untrustworthy and malicious. In that context others will be unlikely to trust her as she would betray a confidence.

In that sense, it will affect her.

Of course it is plainly obvious that there is no 'law' of any kind governing events in human lives at all: Bad stuff happens to good people, good stuff happens to bad people, assholes prosper while saints are crushed and so the world turns.

To think otherwise you would actually have to switch off a part of your brain, as most religious people do, and ignore large parts of what happen to people in the world. - Most of the bad **** in the world happens to people who have done nothing whatsoever to deserve it, usually the poorer and more deeply religious people too - one of the reasons Karma was invented was to keep the Indian peasant down: It basically was a rather ingenious way of telling him he was miserable in this life cause he deserved to be: It is the backbone of the Caste System, and about as far from a groovy hippy-dippy idea as it is possible to get.

But: there is a certain sense that what goes around comes around. If ,for example, your motivating principle in life is the gratification of your own ego, you may in the short term prosper: Narcissistic, extrinsicaly motivated people often do very well in many areas of life. However, what goes around will come around in the sense that those people rarely ever end up being happy. As human happiness is largely based on the conections you make with other human beings, if you spend your life severing those connections, happiness is unlikely to come you way.

I don't think Karma as a force of nature exists. I don't think there is a force in nature that ensures if you are bad bad things happen.

I do think though that a persons reputation and how they treat others can act as a sort of informal karma, in that if you tend to treat people badly you will probably end up being treated or unhappy in return.

if karma existed , stalin , idi imin and pol pot would not have died in a warm bed as old men and robert mugabe would have been whacked by one of his minions years ago

i do however believe that some people are lucky and others arent and completley reject the cliche that you make your own luck , if you made your own luck , it wouldnt be luck , just good descision making , if a young girl or guy happens to be walking home late one night and at an exact moment in time , happens to cross the path of a serial killer , that is plain bad luck , if someone is involved in a car accident and it happens ten miles closer to a hospital than another accident that very day and its the difference between them surviving and the other person dieing , that is plain good luck

Karma doesn't exist in the way that most western people believe. In fact there are a few understandings of what karma actually is depending on whether you are an Indian Buddhist or Chinese Buddhist. Either way it doesn't equate to an eye for an eye

What do i believe though is that what you put out, you get back in return. E.G. If you are a negative person, then you aol attract negative people people into your life. Which makes sense as people of a positive nature will not share your beliefs or views. Granted thus is a simplistic example but correlates to many aspects of life.

I believe in this kind of karma. FOr every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

I dont think anyone gets away scott free, that somewhere down the line they pay, but it doesnt always come in the form of revenge or retribution, but the form of natural inevitabilities.

a possitive person only encountering possitive people is karma and its an extremley simlistic outlook

I don't know anything about the definition of karma in the Buddhist sense (the correct definition, as far as I know), I just know the western interpretation, which seems a load of balls and just something people believe to be in existence because they want it to be - it gives them comfort.
