I would be interested in any experiences; resident, member of staff, passer by.
I wanted to know what the conditions were like, and the occupancy rates.
I was wondering if the occupancy rates are higher post 1st May 2007 when the Habitual Residence Condition came in, therefore excluding many from Social Welfare; such as Job Seekers Allowance/Benefit, Supplementary Welfare Benefit, and Rent Allowance.
After the Celtic Tiger Economy boom years of 2000-2007, and the HRC was implemented the unemployment rate has risen to 13.8% nationally. The homeless numbers have also risen. 13,000 unemployed on the live register in Galway city alone. I would be interested to know how places like the Fairgreen Homeless Hostel are coping?

Walked past it every single night for six months from summer 2004, worked nights in a nearby hotel.
Used to walk the railway path from Renmore every night.
You would hear somebody approaching long before you would see them!
Looking back on it now, not a clever thing to do but well, that was my route every night

2004, boom times indeed.
As a passerby, there were people sleeping outside it with sleeping bags and blankets most nights
I don't know if that means it was full for the night, it's possible.
You would also see people climb in a window around the side some nights

All I can say as a passerby, is even during the Celtic Tiger there were many, many people using it, probably full to capacity but I don't work there so only go by what I observed

The Celtic Tiger passed a lot of people by, homeless before, during and after it

Would you not consider approaching the organisation themselves, which may give you to opportunity to speak to people who could answer you questions better.

staff will listen to you and help ya out

HRC was implemented May 2004..

As others have said, your best bet is to actually contact the service providers. oh and don't forget to credit us in your dissertation!

I heard they have a rule about not allowing anybody that's drunk in, so maybe they only try to stay there when it is very cold so they can drink the other days. Don't really know.

I think it's pretty unreal that we have so many asylum centers but as far as I know only the one homeless shelter.

There's also a homeless centre for women, Fairgreen house is for men only.

Out of interest is that one as full as the mens one?

Haven't a clue, but the men's one isn't that full as far as I know. People sleep outside because you can't stay inside if you're drunk. I know a person living there and apparently he had no problem getting a place the time he applied.

But there are various other accommodations around that the homeless support organisations run, offering different levels of support to people who have the capacity to live more independently.

Ah ok, I was pissed off for nothing. I didn't like that the iBis was setup for Asylum seekers when there were homeless people getting frozen onto foot paths.

I am writing a book.
It is called Johnny Foreigner.
It is about my experiences of being part of the Irish diaspora, who have returned to Ireland after the Celtic Tiger Economy; to an Ireland in recession.

I am interested to hear peoples experiences of Fairgreen Homeless Hostel.
I think they do a wonderful job in providing shelter for the homeless of Galway.
They do not receive enough good publicity for their efforts.
My concern is that there is a lack of investment in Galway in providing shelter for the increasing numbers of homeless.
