The CED shot timer has countdown, shot timer, timed alarm, etc. etc. Also can be RF'd to a large display for spectators if any need

I think doubleapha.biz are the sellers but I know the shop in hilltop carry most of their range so should be able to help you out - hilltopshootingsports.com

if all you want is a countdown to beep your phone should do it

For training though, I find this is far superior:

You can get ones with lights rather than ticks as well, for when the headphones are on.

If you're trying to get a consistent shot rythym, especially for ISSF stuff, it's bloody useful.

If you're trying to time an entire match, any large programmable kitchen timer will do, as will your phone, but mostly I tend to use the range clock for that anyway rather than YAEG (Yet Another Expensive Gizmo) - I buy too many YAEGs as it is

It's a metronome. Musicians use them for keeping time. They'd make an excellent tool for tempo training with the pistol though, as they allow you to break down your shots into a rhythm, rather than getting them off in a given time. The metronome will improve your consistency in other words.

B'man's will do for the NASRPC ones I suppose; but for the ISSF ones you need a different timer really, one which will let you know when the 10 seconds starts and when it finishes (and also for 20 seconds) and which won't eat three seconds of that with faffing about pushing buttons. There are several options, TEC-HRO's is probably the least expensive to buy (intershoot carries them for ~36 pounds). There's a canadian crowd that does custom-made models, but they're more expensive. You can just use the second hand of the range clock if you can see it, but buying a timer at some point is going to help.

Or you could make one yourself, or if you've a laptop on the range, just have a powerpoint presentation playing with "start" and "stop" slides on a timer.

It's a metronome. Just goes "tick, tick, tick, tick" at a steady beat so you have a sense of time as you go through your shot routine, so:
start in ready position with pistol at 45 degrees and touching the bench,
...tick...
start raising pistol up above the shooting position
...tick...
lower pistol into shooting position and settle
...tick...
focus on the sights
...tick...
watch the sights
...tick...
squeeeze...
...tick...
bang...
...tick...
lower pistol.

That way, you've got a consistent, repeatable routine, and once you've learnt it at a slow pace, slide the weight on the metronome down a bit and speed up the ticks and your routine....

That'll work, if you shoot with ear defenders instead of earplugs (you just run the earpiece of the headphones in under the ear defenders, assuming they're the normal earbud iPod type of thing).

If you shoot with plugs though, I'm not sure it's really safe for your ears to shoot with .22lr stuff with the earbud acting as the other earplug, especially indoors. The visual signals are more useful there.

For pistol, you generally use defenders. Plugs are good, but not as good IMO and you can easily slip the earphones in under the defenders. They act as a second line of defence as well.

You tend to be taking the defenders off a lot during pistol matches to hear commands so plugs are just too awkward for that.

I've only seen plugs used in air pistol matches and often it's 50/50 with defenders. Guys who shoot other pistol sports usually use defenders whilst 'pure'

air pistol shooters tend to use plugs.

For pistol I prefer the defenders, they're just so much more handy to take on or off.

Try and get your plugs in while the timer's counting down to zero; frantic isn't in it

Many of the lads that shoot WA1500 have timers that they mount on their 'weak' forearm to allow them to see the time remaining in a detail - they could be the sort of thing you are looking for

I'm not sure of the make and model - I'm sure some of them will be along to point them out

a good excuse to have a nosey around the gadget bit of a few shops

Hi,

I have both the sinclair one (which I use mainly for Benchrest or as a RO) and I have 2 x Fastime 15's which seems to be one of the more popular timers for Pistol/GR as it is smaller than the sinclair/Salter one, and comes with both a wrist and neck strap, it is designed as a Rally Timer, but it has all the functions needed for most shooting.
