Hi all,
I recently completed a day course in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and learned how to use a defibrillator. In addition to this, I learned how to deal with someone who is choking.
I feel like its one of the most valuable skills I’ve ever learned and if ever confronted with a situation where someone was dieing due to a heart attach or choking I will be in a position to perhaps save them (this is applicable for both adults and children/infants).
I am curious if anyone here has learned CPR or first aid and have you ever been required to use it?
I feel this should be thought in schools and I would encourage everyone to consider doing the training.

Did they teach you how to do a tracheotomy? Might be very useful if all else fails in a choking situation.

I have a cert in First Aid yeah. Whether i'll remember it all if i ever have to use it is another matter..

Bit like Degree, you pass your exams but once you go into work ya remember feck all.

no, perhaps in a more advanced course they would teach the tracheotomy, the one i did was a basic skills course yet it was still quite comprehensive with regard to the CPR & AED training..
the Heimlich Manoeuvre is apparently extremely successful, a tracheotomy would not necessarily clear the blocked air passage? i dunno...i should do a first aid course next..

seems like this is getting lots of typical after hours responses...jokes are great when they are funny but stay on topic if ye don't mind..if you've nothing relevant to say, say nothing!

Yep kept two people alive until the ambulance came. The last this year. I learned mine more from baywatch though. Well I recalled a little from when I was in the scouts waaaaay back in the day. Though its not rocket science and easy enough to do. Though surprising the amount of force required on the chest compressions.

Learned it in the Order of Malta which I volunteered with for about 4 years. It is a great piece of knowledge to have, should be compulsory in school, imo. I've never had to use it in a real scenario though, thank god.. but I've given first aid a few times

agreed, feel fatigued fairly quickly as a result!
its amazing to think you could save someone one day..possibly a family member.

Two days training, one day testing.

Test you performing CPR, Defib, putting bandages on and question's on what you would do in certain scenarios.

I think learning to perform CPR properly the most valuable.

I agree that CPR should be taught in schools. They do it in Seattle and it has some of the best statistics for survival of out of hospital cardiac arrests.

Seriously??? Paramedics in Ireland don't even do that!

I had to do CPR on a man that had had a heart attack while driving in Dunnes carpark, unfortunately he didn't survive. Also had to do the heimlich on my mother when she was choking on a bit of steak, i surprised myself because i didn't panic, just went into auto pilot.

You know you can now get sued for calling it a Heimlich maneuver? Yeah the guy doesnt want to be associated with it anymore, so now it's called the "chest thrust":rolleyes:

Completed my FA and Defib training last year, and topped up my FA a few months ago while completing my lifeguard training...useful skills to have

I recently did the three day course too. Haven't had to use it, but am sure glad that I know how to use an AED and that my CPR has been refreshed since a transition year first aid course all those years ago. A course well worth doing

They should teach people in school not to go into cardiac arrest or choke on stuff, then there'd be no need for these courses.

It takes just a couple of minutes to learn 'Hands-Only CPR' but could save somebody's life.
CPR keeps blood circulating to the brain and organs until the arrival of a defibrillator.:D

I saw your video but this not a complete video for CPR training. I'm apply for the CPR training online through American CPR institute & they teach me the full CPR training practically by live action.Today I'm fully prepared to face emergency health situation.
