Gaurds at the door

Didnt know where to post this one. Gaurds called to the door the other day looking for the previous tenant of our house, they were in plain clothes and were not in a squad car. Just wondering could this be for something minor like a summons or would that have been gaurds in uniform doing that? Was all a bit wierd, i told them that id get the phone number for our landlord for them and they just walked into the house without me inviting them. One of them was an old fella and he had his shirt hanging out of his trousers, not professional at all.

this happened to us in 2003 and the bastards called at 5.30 am!! when I answered the door I didn't know what was going on, was greeted by 6 Garda and they all burst into the house looking for some lad, thing is it was a first letting in a brand new apartment block

I would have taken your first point as obvious.

Neither,I would imagine, was he a Garda,hence,I would refrain from commenting on alleged professionalism or otherwise,unless he wanted to take the consequences.

A lucky escape OP. I once had a tenant leave because the Gardai raided the flat,took everything he owned,left the place in a mess,all because they were looking for someone who had lived there a couple of years earlier. In fairness he was in work at the time, and just arrived home as they were leaving. I suppose they assumed that all his belongings were stolen by the ex tenant. He got his stuff back but it put the frightners on him.

Apart from that time,if they have an idea of who owns the house they will always try and get in touch first to get entry by key before breaking the door down, so it pays to be nice I've found.

I'd never let Gardai treat me like that (walking in uninvited). The second they stepped through the door you should have told them to get back on the doorstep. And I certainly wouldn't have let them take anything from the house, no matter who it belongs to.

They were acting unprofessionally. Please remember that Gardai are public servants, they are there to serve, not rule over, the public. They stormed into his house with no authorization and effectively stole things. The public are supposed to have confidence in the Gardai and trust them. Acting like that is disgraceful IMO.
