Irish people using the word "Mate"

What is the story with this.... "mate" has only creeped into Irish society in the past few years, I die a little inside when i hear this word being used.

"mate" is for people from the UK or OZ...suddenly us Irish clowns are using it on a daily basis. it is embarrasing

"thanks mate" or "cheers mate" does not lie well with the Irish accent...

Yep. "Dude" is also something that should be banned in Ireland.

You wear a beanie hat, have a beard and long hair, go weight-lifting in the gym, carry a manbag with laptop in it and use "dude/mate" in everyday conversation. You're a freak.:pac:

The word mate has been used since I was a kid anyway, maybe it's just not used in your circle of mates and your circle of mates isnt representitive of the entire country and their mates?

I remember once I was having trouble with an English ebay deal and the seller kept calling me "mate" in our correspondence. He prob didn't realise it but insincerity this word conjours (at least as far as Irish people interpret it) was like a red-rag in front of a bull and made me feel like he was trying to hoodwink me. I eventually ended up giving him neg-rep, in part because of all the "mate" rubbish.

I hear it all the time, doesn't bother me in an English or Irish accent. I prefer 'bud' as a sentence suffix myself though but it is purely a personal preference, not based on how I think it sounds said in one accent or another...

I think it's fine when used as a noun referring to a third person:

"You know Dave's mate John?"

Using it as a term of endearment is a no-no except when using the expression "I wouldn't touch her with yours mate."

Then again I call everyone man (even chicks) mainly because I can't remember their names.

The problem here OP is that you dont seem to understand that languages evolve all the time

People used to call each other chara, bet you dont remember that way back.
Even the word pal was popular in ireland back in the 40s and 50s, son was also a popular word that has gone out of fashion, like garsún etc

If all you've got to complain about is people using the word mate, then you've really got f*ck all to be giving out about, far more important things to be worryin about
