Hi everyone!

My boyfriend and I are heading to galway city in august for a few days during the week, and just looking for some advice.

It's his birthday one of the days, and I'd like to take him out to a fancy restaurant that night, preferably one we can both dress up for (ie suit and nice dress) and not look really overdressed! Any places like this around?

Also we'd love to spend the nights in pubs playing traditional music with a nice atmosphere. I'm sure there's no shortage of these in galway, but just wondering which places would have this midweek too?

Thanks for any advice. We can't wait!

For snazzy restaurants were you can look teh biz (these are expensive mind):

The White Gables, Moycullen (my favourite in Galway - always superb)

2nd The White Gables.
Great food. Old world charm though - don't expect a modern interior!

In Galway city my favs are Oscars

Mind you, they are not 'shirt and tie' places but are great for food and a step above the pizza and pasta style if you were looking for something a little special

If you wanted something very different I would try BK'S. It is a French place which has amazing food (best in Galway if you ask me!) and a fantastic wine selection. However it is much more rustic and casual and they have music at night which may not suit......

So do Tig Coilis and Taffes - both on Shop St.

There are various others too, of varying quality, depending on which specific nights you're here.

It's ok to eat in but it is not a place to dress up for at all. Loads of families and students, you would feel out of place having an evening meal here all dressed up!

carmex21's choices are good and they are in the city so you can walk to them. You would need to get a taxi to all the ones charlie_says suggested as they are not in the city, but they are good suggestions. You should look into going to the Pullman, it's a short drive, as are the others!

Mulberrys is unreal. And not expensive as was said previously. Used to be but one course is 16, two 19 and three 21 or 23, can't remember at the moment! And not an early bird. Love it.
The g for lunch or one of their specials is something different?

I couldn't agree on the White Gables. I think it's overrated and I did not have a good experience there. I heard the same thing from others. I ate in the West in the Twelve Hotel in Barna (4/5 miles outside city) and it was superb and had a touch of class all around, great food, proper service and nice decor. Another nice place is Kirwan's Lane in the city but this can be a bit pricey.

Tamirand - fantastic Thai place on the Spanish Arch. Great service, great atmosphere. You'll have to make a booking if its for the weekend tho.

Abalone is quite high end/expensive.
I don't think you'd be out of place with a shirt & tie.
Food & service is great

I would recommend Abalone too. It's a fantastic place to eat, very intimate, best service and food in Galway city imo. The service is excellent in a very informal sort of way, the way service in Ireland should be.

You would not be out of place in a shirt and tie but it really is not necessary unless you personally want to dress up. There are not (m)any places in Galway that I can think of that require a shirt/tie formal wear actually.
