Throwing a Paddy?

Just watching ITV there during the Brazil v Chile game and the commentator (Clive Tyldesley I think) said just before half time that the manager was going to "throw a Paddy" when he got his team in!

Maybe I'm naive but I have never heard this expression before! Thoughts?

Was there a paddy honduras on the team? Perhaps they are going to hide the ball under his jersey and lob him into the opposing teams goal?

Lived in the UK for a while and it is a common enough saying. It amused me and perplexed me in equal measures, I usually ended going of on one when I heard it :P

It's a common enough term in parts of England, I know I've heard it on numerous occasions over there. I do not think it's used in an anti-Irish manner but just one of those expressions like 'paddy wagon' or "I was working like a 'black'".

Saying that it did grate on my ears the first time I heard it.

"throw a paddy" is an expression used in the UK to mean lose your temper.

dates back to the days of paddywhackery, when the irish were looked upon as thick & violent

Clive Tyldesley, like most football commentators of an English persuasion likes the sound of his own voice abit too much. If he concentrated on the match and stopped trying to make blatently racist remarks, he would do better. Im shocked and appalled frankly. :pac:
