Awkward lift moments

What do you do for those few moments of awkwardness when travelling in lifts with complete strangers?
Or even worse, you hop into a lift at the workplace & you realise at the last second the only person there is someone you can't stand & the feeling is mutual.

This used to happen to me a lot at a place i used to work. Very annoying.

My personal favorite is not facing the conventional way, stand with your back to the doors, makes life pretty awkward for everyone.

was in the library in college waiting for the lift with a bunch of guys from my class. 2 lifts arrive together so they all bundled into one, leaving me to go in the other lift which just had 2 girls in it, one of whom was gorgeous.
for the 20 seconds it took the lift to get to the ground floor, all i could hear was the guys in the other lift shouting 'ballsy is a prick, you bollox' etc. all i could do was bite my lip and not burst out laughing!

I once got into a lift in work years ago, reeking of drink from the night before and our CEO was in the lift, visiting from the states.

I don't think Ive ever been in a lift for more than four stops, so I just walk in with my bottle of water and throw it about a bit.

I satyed on the 42nd floor of a Shanghai Hotel for a few days and the lift always had a really old western guy with his hands on the ass of a really young chinese girl - every friggin' time i got in (different people - same craic) they were long and awkward lift moments.

People talking to you while you're still on the lift as they got off and the doors are closing, Jesus, get it all out of the way in the lift, say goodbye and walk out. lift Protocol fail.

and what's worse, your response while still in the lift is something woeful like "heeeeh ok". You know sound like an idiot and the people still in the lift are only dying to repeat back to you "heeeeeh ok, hahaha" bastids!!!!
