I just thought I'd start this thread so anyone with specific course/education questions for me, could post here to get an answer. So if you've any questions, let loose..

What are the reasons that an external examiner would want interview a student?

Can you PM me/email me on sueducation@ul.ie with your course? The procedures for FYP interviews vary across campus so if I know your course I can advise you properly.

I got a job out in france for the summer, the contract runs until the 15th of september which means the earliest i can be back is the 16th-17th
If i have a module next autumn that gives out marks for attendance of tutorials or something similar id miss at least 2 weeks of it, is there anything i can do about this?

Hi,

I had it in my head that I replied to this but now I'm not sure. The best option is to contact the lecturer in advance of next semester and explain your situation. The other thing to bear in mind is that you tutorials usually don't begin until Week 3 so you may be ok from an attendance perspective.

I'm a former student of BSc. Biological Sciences (phys or chem) but dropped out mid-way through repeating 1st year. I was just wondering if there is a way to "drop in"? If so, I'm assuming tuition fees will be applicable?

I wonder if you help with 3 quick questions re QCA...

1st: Is it true that the FYP is worth double weighting (my course is New Media and English if that makes a difference)?

2nd: If my current accumulated QCA is 3.3 and the 1.1 cut off is 3.4, what kind of results average would I need in my 4 modules to get over the 1.1 level Do you think an A and 3 B's would do the trick (roughly speaking)?

3rd: what exactly is residual QCA, as opposed to accumulated QCA (which I am assuming is the one that matters!)

any advice much appreciated!

Hi Eamonn,

(1) The weighting attached to your FYP depends on the credits attached. For example my FYP was a 12 credit module meaning it was double weighted against my remaining 6 credit modules. Other courses have the FYP in both semesters as 6 credit modules, that too results in it being double weighted. If one of these applies to yours, then it is double weighted. If it is a 6 credit module in one sememster, then it isn't.

(2) I'm afriad I can't roughly speak but I can send you the QCA calculators to work it out. Send me an email on Aoife.Finnerty@ul.ie and I'll reply with the links. It's also available somewhere on boards but I've no idea where. Bear in mind also that a discretionary band applies to AHSS courses. The University level for a 1.1 may be 3.4, but AHSS applies discretion of 0.1 to the best of my knowledge.

(3) Residual QCA is really only relevant to students in working out whether or not they have to repeat D1 and D2 fail grades. If the Residual QCA is below 2, then the Ds must be repeated. If it is above 2, repeating is optional.

Hope this answers everything or at least points you to where your questions can be answered.

Hey,

I'm really sorry. I only just saw this now. For some reason I either didn't get an email or didn't see it. Ok, the SSC meeting is on June 30th. The closing date for applying is June 24th, so after that date notification is sent out about the meeting to the students. The decision is usually made that week and then you're notified. Sorry about the delay! If you've any more questions, just shout back.

In the christmas exams i got a qca of 2.0 even though i failed one exam and got a compensatory fail in another... will i have to repeat both? I was doing BBS with french but now ive swapped to just BBS.. The one i failed was french and since i dropped it do i still have to repeat it?

Ok. If your QCA is 2.0 or above then you do not have to repeat a compensatory fail. You can opt to, the clear it from your record but it's not mandatory. Regarding the fail in French, it depends. I would advise you contact your course director about it as soon as possible. In some cases you would be required to repeat but in others you wouldn't, so I can't give you a straight answer.

Hi i just got the dreaded letter and it said i am required to repeat module(s) EC4102,MA4102,AC4002 my QCA was 1.96. i got a D2 in maths and accounting so is it ok if i was to only repeat economics ??

Big big shock, I got the letter today, knew I def had one repeat!! Got an F so no surprise, but my QCA is 2.14 yet they are making me repeat all my compensating fails?!? Did not expect this at all! Why am I repeating my comp fails even though my QCA is over 2?! Could you please get back to me asap

I got the dreaded letter today. The thing is that I failed a spanish module at christmas, I've since given it up and would not have a great prospect of passing it now.

I've emailed my course advisor and director, in the hope that I can take a different exam, have you ever heard of this before?

I've just received a final accumulated QCA of 3.35. The cut off for a 1.1 is 3.4, but I see from your previous post that there is a .1 discretionary band for AHSS courses.
Can you advise what an AHSS course is exactly, and whether New Media and English is such a course.
Also, when you say that the band is discretionary, how do I know if it has been applied to my QCA and whether I have received a 1.1 or a 2.1?

Hi Mici,

I can't answer that unfortunately. You'll have to calculate your QCA with and without the D grades cleared with and without a C3 in the Economics module.

If your QCA is above 2, then you have the option to repeat compensatory fails. It is not mandatory that you repeat them. There have been some problems with the automatically generated letters this year but the usual rule applies.

QCA > 2 - Ds are optional repeats
QCA < 2 - Ds are mandatory repeats

3.35 qualifies you for a 1.1. New Media and English is a course housed entirely in the Faculty of Arts Humanities and Social Sciences thus that discretionary band is applies to the course. Discretion is automatically applied so you don't have to do anything to get it (aside from get a QCA of 3.3 or above)

Im in/was in forth year law and accounting. My final accumulated QCA is 3.31.

I think this is a 1.1 degree but im not sure. Could you please let me know for sure whether it is or not.

The discretionary band for AHSS is 0.1 so you have a 1.1 with a QCA of 3.3 and above. Congratulations.
