How to play .mkv on PS3

ps3mediaserver to stream mkvs from your pc to your PS3 would be my preference, but depending on your router/processor mkv2vob to convert mkvs to files that can be played on the PS3 might be a better option.

With mkv2vob when dealing with more that 2.1 audio it messes it up when you need to convert the audio, depending on whether the original file is ac3 or acc (for the audio codec) use gotsent for the former and mkv2vod for that latter (may be other way round).

I was wondering why some of them would be messed up...any quick way to tell which is which? I mainly stream now anyway, so just asking out of interest.

In mkv2vob it says when it converts one that's one way to know just cancel it if it does, depending on the media player your pc uses it may tell you there.

media player classic will tell you or use a program called mediainfo it gives a lot of information but all you need is the codec under the audio options.

I've ised mkv2vob before and I am pretty sure it doesn't do any video conversion for you unless you want the subtitles hardcoded in the video. It just dumps the video and audio streams into a vob container. It doesn't change the quality.

All it changes is the container the video & audio is not usually not needed to be converted.

I am using MKV2VOB and is perfect! Easy and fast!

If you streaming MKV from your PC you are loosing quality. Reversing or forwarding takes ages!

I doubt that's the case at all! In fact, you're more likely to lose quality using mkv2vob considering the varying output sizes depending on what settings you're using!

I have always very similar file size from original...
Once I converted "300" around 32GB and looked amazing on PS3...

But You need to change from VOB to M2TS

300 does not look amazing on the PS3, I have it on Bluray and was very disappointed with it. It's because of the way it was shot more than anything. 32GB? That must have been split into 8 parts, that's a pain in the arse!

On the similar file sizes, that's true of regular avis, but from what I remember the hi-def ones or the ones with subtitles are much bigger.

I have 300 on blu-ray as well.
You probably mean this thousands shadow points all over the screen for all movie - it was designed by director

so many parts wasn't a problem... You can set in PS3 settings to automatic go to next video bellow.
Anyway, most MKV has 7-12GB

I know that, I just don't like it...it's like a disk skipping when the video changes.

I have other feelings...

I just lie on the bed and see some kind of freeze for less than a second and it's still playing. Many times during the HD movie I didn't notice that at all.

Disc changing it's much more complicated... I will have to leave my bad, which is not acceptable!

I use Vuze to convert ti to a PS3 format and any streaming program like Medialink or other should be good to go.

So your saying that mkv2vob will loose quality when you make it loose quality, if you don't mess with the setting the file will come out around the same size and at exactly the same quality as the video and audio weren't converted.

Hence, the quality of highly compressed media files will never look and sound as good as the original media. When you compress audio and video files for streaming, you will always lose some quality. The only problems I've found is not being able to stream high quality files...hopefully a wireless n router connected directly to the PS with sort that one out. I have however watched T4 at home over the network and if there was any loss in quality, it'd take a machine to notice it!

I have a new TV that plays MKV but my FAT32 hard drive that plugs into it wont recognize anything over 4GB.
If i copy everything off it then reformat to NTFS it will but then it wont work in my PS3, darn it. Just gonna have to get another external HDD.
Although if they upgrade the PS3 to the latest DivX version i believe that will give us MKV support.

I'd be extremely surprised (and delighted) if they released a firmware upgrade that supported mkv!
