TV's with MPEG4 DTT decoder

Hello,

I'm new to a lot of the issues around DTT and am in the market for a new television. I was just wondering is there are any TV's out there that have MPEG4 decoders build into them so I would not have to get a seperate decoder when DTT goes fully live. Could anyone recommend a TV that they know has this decoder?

I was thinking of getting this TV but am nearly sure it does not support MPEG4...

No, that TV is not freeview HD compatible, I don't think there are any combo freeview HD / freesat TVs in the Sony range.

According to byte any Sony model ending in 3 (eg. EX503) has Freeview HD (MPEG4 DVB-T2). See the Sony UK website.

I have UPC digital select here and I am strongly thinking of cancelling it a month after the twelve month contract is finished. I rarely watch it as I have HD and SD fta satellite and there are only a handful or so of half decent channels with the digital select pack worth watching, the rest are rubbish or can be watched with my sat receivers or a small amplified indoor aerial with the SD Sagem Picnic box for Irish DTT tests. Bit of a rip off UPC in my opinion but had no other option when we first moved in and rented this house.

Can confirm 100% its MPEG-4 (and MHEG-5), watching it right now

Manual available here with the specs at the rear.

Got it from Peats in Dublin for €519 + delivery.

Received mine today, set it to Ireland. Didn't check it in UK mode.

I can also confirm MHEG-5 is available on the Irish DTT channels with the Ireland setting. FTA satellite and not freesat is available in this setting also so no red button or epg (now and next only) but I'm happy with that, can arrange the channels the way I want.

My only concern would be that until digital is officially launched, I have no guarantee of a digital rte signal and I'd watch a fair bit of RTE1 and 2

Why would one need VHF anyway? there are only 2 channels on it, as far as I know, RTE1 and NET2.
you get this on RTE digital. so no big loss. or is it? Am I missing something here?

Just spoke to a Panasonic retailer who says that the Panasonic TX-P42G20 connot pick up Irish DTT as it only has an MPEG2 freeview tuner for UK & connot decode the Irish "saorview" MPEG4.

I set it for UK, the MHEG text does show up on the RTE channels.

Will try those settings shortly and see what happens.

Right, TV bought, set up and everything working fine, incluing the RTE channels.

What settings do you have for the sound/picture? I think what I have is OK but I'm curious incase there's somehting I haven't done or checked that might improve the picture or sound.

One small niggle, I have deleted the shopping/tart/text/pay channels from the list, but when I go to view the EPG they still come up. I have re-ordered the channels as to how I want them but they still appear scattered among them or at the end of the EPG. Can they not be fully deleted?

If I run into any difficulties later when setting it up I may take you up on that offer! Seperate settings for each input it handy, same as my Sony, because playing the Gamecube and watching DVd's require different settings, most manufacturers don't understand that!

I cant give you a full answer to your question. I have it set to Ireland which gives me Irish DTT I don't receive Freeview. I do get MHEG-5 with the Ireland setting.

BTW i can fully recommend the samsung. If you are not happy with the picture, reading reviews many people were not, there are a LOT of settings to play with so with a lot of configuring you can get a perfect picture. If you need any help with that just ask. I think the problem with a lot of complainers was that they just couldn't get right. Prepare to spend about an hour with the picture settings it probably won't be brilliant out of the box.

Also you can configure separate settings for each input as each source will be different.

For freeview HD the TV must also be DVB-T2 compliant i.e. it must carry the freeview HD logo.

TVs that carry that logo will also be DVB-T MPEG2 and MPEG4 backward compatible and should receive the overspill Irish DTT channels.

I'm going for the Samsung LE32B450 in Argos, it has been reduced to £299 now. Freeview HD doesn't interest me at the moment, and when it comes, I'll probably just buy a STB that will get me it if it ends up offering more/different channels than Freesat HD does.

It would be nice if the first page could be contantly updated with makes and model numbers so we don't have to look through the entire thread if we want to check if a certain TV works. It would make trying to find a suitable TV much easier anyway!

Just to ask, does the Samsung LE32B450C4WXXU have an MPEG 4 tuner and work with the new HD test channel too?
