WTF is that about? Why do some people only smoke when they drink? Why even bother - drinking alcohol might make you enjoy your night more but smoking won't! These people will eventually become addicted to cigarettes.

Do people do this to 'fit in', or is it because a lot of their friends spend time in the smoking areas and they feel left out. I hear people saying all sorts of things like 'Smoking is actually really nice, but only when you're drunk', 'It makes you drunk quicker', or 'You get a great buzz off smoking when you drink' but it sounds like bull to me - I think they're doing it because they feel left out and they are trying to fit in.

What are your thoughts?

I smoke only when I drink. Never been a regular and tbh I know I never will.

I think I remember reading something about how alcohol increases the enjoyment you get from smoking. So not only are peoples will power lower (as they've had a few drinks), but the alcohol magnifies the pleasure they get from having a smoke.

I think it's just got to do with all the smokers having to go outside to have a smoke now.. all the craic is to be had outside so people go out.. then it's probably peer pressure or whatever suppose you get the craving to have a fag when your out there...

blame the smoking ban basically.. more young people smoke when there out than ever before as far as i can see because of it...

I only smoke when I drink as when I drink I lose my inhibitions, I also enjoy smoking. I'm not addicted and I buy my own when I go out. I'm also not addicted, I never crave for a cigarette. I understand that it is unhealthy, but so is drinking.

I guess some people are just jealous that others can give up smoking whenever they wish.

I used to smoke all the time from about 12 - 21, or there abouts. I have the very odd one sober now but very very rarely.

Drinking is my weakness and I always smoke when drinking.

There are lots of people out there who smoke all the time just because it looks cool, forget the pub part of it. Rather silly.

For me I have the odd few when Im out drinking. Its the only time I find myself liking it. Maybe the alcohol is dumbing down my "OMG WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO YOURSELF" senses.
I never crave one any other time. I could smoke about 10 in a night out but I never crave afterwards.

I also agree with the first one in a long while giving you a buzz.

I've had around a 20 a day habit for the last about 13 years or so but in the last year have cut down a lot and am now an "only when i drink" smoker. Simple reason, when I get drunk I have neither the will power nor the inclination to not smoke!

I've done this before and ended up drinking 5 nights a week to compensate but that obviously lead back to smoking fullt time but the last year and a half or so, I've managed to stick to only when drinking once a week or so.

I really dont understand this. I always go out to the smoking area to talk to ppl and have a laugh but I never smoke. I dont think the fact that you have to go out there to have a good chat with someone, is a reason to smoke while you're out there.

a few of my friend who are the smoke when you drink type are ex smokers..they dont smoke during the week but still feel the need to have one or two when they are out socialising..i hate it as everytime i go for one they follow me and bum from me so a pack of 20 is gone in the space of 4 cigarettes that i have..if they know they are smoking when they go out they should buy 20 but they think if they have them at home they'll go back on them again

I only smoke when I drink...when I'm sober I can control my cravings...when I'm drunk I'm not so much in charge. And yes it does help me enjoy my night more. I could sit there tapping my leg craving the damn thing, or I could buy a pack of fags, take a step outside and enjoy every beautiful drag of a delicious Marlboro light....YUM!

Try 3 to 5 every time you're on a night out. Not saying impossible but different story altogether.

How long do you have to be smoking to be considered a smoker? I only started a few months ago but I smoke between 5 and 10 rollies in an evenin now.. Hate cigarettes, love Drum Light.

Don't think I want to brand myself as a smoker just yet though.

What was that all about ? I'm not implying how great I am not becoming addicted, I was merely pointing out a flaw in the OP's statement that "eventually these people will all become addicted", it's simply not true. Jeez you smoking addicts are an odd bunch.

I know loads of people who would have a smoke when they are drinking even though they don't smoke normaly.

I have no bother going out to the smoking area with them and not smoking but I can see the appeal I suppose. It's a social thing

20 a year is extremely low IMO for someone who goes out at the weekends and smokes while drinking. I might have went through 300 a year and there is a big difference in how easy it is not getting addicted. Although, I still find it relatively easy at that amount. Perhaps 500 or more would be really tough. It depends on the person's willpower really.

just shows how bad alcohol can be as a gateway drug.. and how addictive fags are, as i started smoking as a 'only when i drink person' .. i mean i wouldn't smoke anything from the headshop if it was like cigarettes, if its not a good buzz then i wouldn't bother.. but here i am typing this fag in hand, breath stinking and the keyboard getting covered in ash!
