A Dublin teenager has been convicted of murdering two Polish men, who he stabbed through the head with a screwdriver outside their home.
David Curran of Lissadel Green, Drimnagh is facing a double life sentence for the killings of Pawel Kalite and Marius Szwajkos on February 23rd 2008.
His co-accused Sean Keogh of Vincent’s Street West has been acquitted on both murder charges, but has pleaded guilty to assault causing harm.
This was a most violent murder – David Curran then aged 17 drove a screwdriver through the skull of Pawel Kalite, and then seconds later Marius Szwajkos as he tried to intervene.
The court heard the attack was in direct response to a scuffle outside the chipper minutes earlier involving, Pawel Kalite and three teenage friends of the accused.
There were tears from Pawel’s sister Agnishka when the verdicts were read out after 6 hours of jury deliberations.
Sean Keogh was cleared on both murder charges; he will be sentenced for assault later this month having admitted to kicking Pawel Kalite in the head after he had been stabbed.
Curran is now facing the mandatory life term which will be handed down following a hearing tomorrow, when victim impact statements will be read out.

Something I find disturbing about the verdicts in this case as reported by the Irish Times:

"It (the jury) reached a unanimous guilty verdict on the count of murdering Mr Kalite and a majority guilty verdict of 11 to one on the count of his murdering Mr Szwajkos"

This means that the twelfth person in the jury did NOT find this sub-animal mutant guilty on the second count. This begs the question: how could any sane person find this thing less than guilty on BOTH counts?

Then: "The jury was not satisfied that Keogh was in a joint enterprise with Curran, that he knew he had a screwdriver going into the fight or that he might use it to kill or cause serious injury. It was unanimous in its decision to acquit him of murdering both men."

Keogh had gone with the Curran looking for trouble. On what basis was it not a joint enterprise? What about on the basis that: he kicked a man in the head AFTER he had just been stabbed in the head twice with a screwdriver right in front of him. He didn't mind doing that, so it's extremely doubtful that he would've minded if Curran had a screwdriver and intended to use it.

As for the sentences. Laughable. Hopefully they will meet true justice before they get a chance to act like sub-human scum in the free world again.

THE teenagers spent the day down by the banks of the Grand Canal, drinking, smoking cannabis and taking pills.

Bizarrely, given that it was February, they even went swimming.

"Just another day down at the canal," as David Curran told the Central Criminal Court in his evidence.

Less than 300m away from this impromptu party, Polish mechanic Pawel Kalite had just come home to his house on Benbulben Road in Drimnagh, Dublin, after a hard day's work.

Two very different worlds were about to collide with devastating results, culminating in an act of unspeakable savagery.

David Curran (19) and Sean Keogh (21) sat unblinkingly through their trial for the double murder of Pawel Kalite (29) and Marius Szwajkos (27) on February 23, 2008.

The two young Dublin men had, throughout the course of that day, been socialising with friends and consuming copious amounts of alcohol -- vodka and alcopops -- hash and pills -- Curran admitted taking between 15 and 20 tabs of what he termed as "bluies and yellows". Drugs expert Dr Brian Kirby informed the court that these were benzodiazepam, a sedative, but said a mixture of the two induces a state of aggression.

A young teenage girl who cannot be named for legal reasons, also down at the canal, said the group had continued their socialising in a field at St Michael's.

Curran stole a moped and found a screwdriver in the carrier. He was now armed.

The young girl and friends parted company from Curran and Keogh, going to the chipper on Benbulben Road.

It was here, at about 6.30pm that their paths crossed with Pawel Kalite for the first time. Kalite was coming out of the chipper when a young teenage boy in the group bumped into him.

Kalite became enraged and began to chase the boy around. A row ensued and the boy's uncle, who was passing by, became involved. Kalite was knocked to the ground in the scuffle.

A housemate, Radek Szeremeta happened to see the incident and saw Mr Kalite receive "hard slaps" from a couple of teenage girls.

Mr Szeremeta asked if he was okay but Mr Kalite did not reply and went home, furious at the humiliation.

When Radek Szeremeta's sister, Kamila asked Mr Kalite what had happened, he said he had been beaten up by some kids.

Mr Kalite had been "so mad he was crying," Ms Szeremeta said, while her brother recalled him shouting: "I will kill them all."

They begged him not to leave the house to get involved in any trouble but he did not listen. Another housemate, Marius Szwajkos urged him not to leave the house alone.

Meanwhile, back at the shops at Benbulben Road, Curran received a phone call from "some young ones," telling him that his father had been stabbed.

He rushed up, looking for trouble, kicking a car outside the chipper and then the gang set off up Benbulben Road.

He was near the house where the Polish people were standing in the garden when Curran said someone screamed: "It was them."

It all happened in seconds. Kamila Szeremeta ducked as she saw Curran lunge with a screwdriver. It missed her, striking Mr Kalite instead.

Curran claimed "the bald man" -- Mr Kalite -- came at him, shouting.

"It made me go mad," Curran said. He stabbed Mr Kalite. Then "the other fella was on me and I stabbed him too."

The screwdriver was driven into the brain, through the temple in both men, leaving them with no chance of survival.

"Come on Schillachi (Curran's nickname), they're dead," a young boy shouted.

"I got a fright, I ran into the park," said Curran, who told the court how he'd gone home, had a curry for dinner and threw up, before going to "his auntie's," where he hid.

Text messages had gone backwards and forwards between Curran and the young teenage girl the night of the killing.

"Ha ha but like I can't believe it. Mad nite xxxx," she said.

He replied: "F*** it. Delete message. Get a new number tomorrow."

After seeing that txt from the bitch who started everything I just cant believe shes getting off scot free.

Did anyone else hear the interview with the Newstalk reporter on breakfast this morning? He coincidentaly was passing by when this happened, and arrived on the scene just after the kids and legged it and before the police arrived.

Hi account of being with one of the men was harrowing. They didn't just get stabbed in the head and lights out. They were conscious of what was happening, they were in terrible pain and they were terribly afraid before they died.

Please, do me a favour and imagine as vividly as you can how you would feel if you were on the ground, losing your battle to stay awake, in terrible pain, surrounded by strangers, powerless really to help you. You have a girlfriend, a life ahead of you, plans... And you can see it all slipping away.

Every one of the people involved, frum the murderer himself to the girls who incited the trouble, should be charged, tried and given sentences for all of their crimes to service one after the other: Breaching the peace. Incitement. Robbery. Obstructing the course of justice. Possession of illegal drugs. Etc etc etc.

Imagine laying there, dying like that... My God, those poor men.

Am I the only one who finds it unnerving that some tiny little knacker with a screwdriver can actually manage to kill too big Polish lads? Jesus I thought I was at least reasonably safe being strong and big, but I guess not if a little runt can cause this kind of damage with apparent ease.

From what I understand they were both stabbed with force through the temple, the screwdriver stopped only when it hit the inside of the skull on the other side of the head after going completely through each persons brain.

So smartarsey comments aside 'This surprises you!!!!!! ' if they had been stabbed elsewhere on the skull chances are it would not have gone completely through. The skull is generally quite tough, bar great mass/force / bullets etc.

Apparently Marius Szwajkos was hit twice by the screwdriver, the first one only wounded him. I imagine the jury member probably gave the benefit of the doubt in that case, that Curran may have been "defending" himself from the second man, even if he intentionally killed the first.

TBH, that's the point of a jury and I think the fact that one jury member disagreed on that count illustrates even more strongly that justice was done; because clearly the jury were giving very serious consideration to the entire body of evidence instead of immediately siding against Curran.

Keogh had gone with the Curran looking for trouble. On what basis was it not a joint enterprise? What about on the basis that: he kicked a man in the head AFTER he had just been stabbed in the head twice with a screwdriver right in front of him. He didn't mind doing that, so it's extremely doubtful that he would've minded if Curran had a screwdriver and intended to use it.

You would need to show that Keogh intended to cause death or serious harm. The fact that he was unarmed and that he only attacked *after* Curran did, doesn't really tell us what his intentions were.

Unfortunately in this country, a kick in the head resulting in death is still only likely to get you a manslaughter sentence. If you kick someone in the head, and the kick doesn't kill them, it's just assualt. :rolleyes:

At 17, I was at most an inch shorter than I am now and probably a little bit wider. So there might not have been much in it.
I imagine unpreparedness is probably what caught out the Polish guys. They were expecting a bit of a scrap with some local yobs. If they'd known what kind of scum they were up against, they would probably have thought twice about going outside.

This is a shocking case. There is a myriad of reasons why someone can develop
an ability to do this to someone else. If only there was a miracle cure for it. I cant
help but feel that Curran has some sort of illness to be able to do something like
this. Same goes for any sociopath walking our streets.

Its so unnerving and if that was me bumping into someone in any chipper, I would
never, ever consider taking any action which could escalate the situation, even if
it meant I was not standing up for myself.

I remember being on the Luas last year and 2 girls got on beside me and started
pulling another girls hair on the other side of me and punching her in the face and
kicking her. In the heat of the moment I stood in between the attackers and the girl
to protect her and got hit, spat on and abused. It was a mad situation and in hindsight
(particularly after reading about this story) I dont know that i'd do it again...

Scary stuff and so so sad for our society......

In this discussion i think its actually more important to question our useless limp-wristed judicial system which has failed the relatives of the two dead men & not the various newly invented & fashionable psychobabble that supposedly explains the reasons behind this sort of savagery.

While I feel sorry for the senslaess muders of these two Dublin residents and their families, I wonder why the same outrcry was not evident when Brian Murphy was murdered outside Annabelles in 2006? This poor unfortunate was murdered by rich kids and they did no time in prison for this. Is it the fact that the two guys were non nationals and the weapon was different than the boots used by the 4 killers make it a more serious crime? Is Brian Murphy less dead because of the weapon? Make me wonder about sentencing in this country. If David Curran was from Foxrock and the two unfortunate dead men were Irish, I will bet that there would not be a word about it.This is clearly wrong. Same as when that you black guy was killed, there was such an outcry about it and the liberarls tried to make it a racist motivated murder. It was not and like this case it was just a vicious killing and terrible but no more than more sensless needless deaths.

your missing my point altogether,without a doubt he is a scumbag,but there is an argument why people do these things and others dont.

im probably getting to philisophical about the whole thing,its just something that always intersested me,is the way our brains made up responsible for the things we do,hence do we really have free will and make our own decisions or is it out of our hands and controlled by chmemicals or whatever.
