I signed up to this website to pay my respects to my hero and longtime companion Gerry Ryan. I never met the man but I was still a close friend that invited him into my home every morning for a chat and a laugh, as many in the country did the same. I listened to Gerrys funeral on 2fm and the tears were streaming down my face. I am trembling and find it hard to talk without bursting into tears again. For many long years this man shared my life, my disappointments, upsets and joys and was always available for a kind consoling word between 9 and 12 on 2fm. I neve missed a show on those long years, apart from once when I had to go to hospital, and my sister was kind enough to tape it for me to listen to when i got out. I have hunderds of shows on tape and I will listen to them for the rest of my life. Gerry transformed the airwaves and helped Ireland get where it is today. In some ways, he was the confidence of a nation and rightly belongs alongside Pearse, Connoly, and our other national heroes in the pantheon of legends. Gerry Ryan helped make modern Ireland. he opened our eyes to to the future, and hopefully beyond. Ireland before Gerry was stuffy, backwards and self conscious. Gerry showed us the strentgh we have inside ourselves and what we can do if we truly believe, and have a kind spirit. My own father died young so ina a lot of repsects Gerry was for me the only real father I had for most of my life. He was a wonderful, kind man whose stories would make you laugh and even cry. When i needed him, he was there. Gerry was our collective father. He was our brother, daughter, son and confidant. He was a larger than life bon viveur and raconteur. His voice could light up a romm, and his footstep fell heavy wherever he went. I am shocked at the cruelty of people who sign up just to trash the man's name and memory. I feel sorry for you, that you never bothered to appreciate Gerry when he was alive, and all that he did for you. Think of his kids, his gorgeous wife and girlfirend, and the thousands of ordinary men and women Gerry's death leaves helpless. I pray that Gerry's family finds the strength that they need to get on with their lives, which must certainly now be empty, unliveable, angry at the God that would cut a life so rich so quickly. I know Gerry is in heaven now, looking down on all of as and probably having a laugh. He is with all the greats, john lennon, frank sinatra, james dean, jfk, churchill, gengis khan, etc.. I wonder what they make of his tall tales. To know i will never hear his voice again, apart from the old tapes, makes me utterly devastated. God rest your soul, you were Ireland's prince. Gerry, rest in peace and may your spirit enrich us all philomena

I see no problem with how anything has been handled by his family, or 2fm. The man was in the irish primetime spotlight for 22 years, and he was ALWAYS there (for me anyway, I'm 22). I listened to either himself or Ray D'arcy in the mornings, and I feel a bit sad that he's dead. For people who have lsitened to him constantly for 22 years, it's like losing a friend or constant companion who may have helped them through very bad or good times.

Whether you think Gerry was 'just' a radio presenter, and think that the upset Irish public are idiots are being so, or whether you are a hardcore fan who is distraught at his loss, noone should think that they have the right to blatently disrespect him or the family he has left behind.

Some posters on here should be ashamed of their callousness. It is less than a week since Gerrys death, and the Irish public SHOULD be given the chance to say goodbye to the man.

R.I.P Gerry.

No she was acknowledged at the beginning by the priest who said she was a treasured friend to Gerry in the past year or so. I think someone else mentioned her but i was very surprised to see Fr Brian D'Arcy and his brother not mention her. The fact that Morah did was very classy.

Someone said her sense of loss is equal to Morah's .. Im not sure if i'd agree. She was with him for just over a year, they weren't living together and she seemingly didnt have a key to his apartment as she had to get a builder to open the door for her. Morah was with him since she was 17, had 5 kids and was obviously still on good terms with him as they were texting about the kids just last week. Thats not to say Melanie wasn't an important person in his life but you can't compare more than 30 years of history to a year of dating.

I do hope she was consulted about the funeral though and asked if she wanted to contribute a reading or hymn.

I thought it was a very fitting and moving service and am sure that the thousands who listened to him everyday would have found some sort of closure and comfort from being able to listen to it...
He was a man who lived in the public eye and fair play to his family for recognising that and allowing his many fans to in some way feel that they were part of his funeral.

Yeah....but why are people making a story of this? Really, we knew Gerry Ryan on 2fm, as a v v popular (albeit controversial), figure. But in his death, l think it's wrong to make a judgement of the people in his life. WE (his listening public) DID NOT KNOW HIM PERSONALLY.......let the man Rest in Peace and let his Family and Friends grieve his passing -RIP

I was making that point in reference to the post that said that his partner had only been in his life a year and didn't even have a key to his apartment as she'd to get the builders to knock the door down. I really wasn't trying to judge the people in his life, in fact the opposite....

Ah, that's ok - kind of you to clear it up. Just there have been some absolutely awful comments here earlier - really awful - as a mum, l hope his children never read some posts.

I think we have no more part in the life of the Ryan Family or (the extended family) other than to wish them well in rebuilding their lives and be happy.

I doubt the funeral will be available. If you click on the rte 2fm website, click missed a show and change the date in the right hand corner, it'll bring up old shows from that specific date. I dunno if they're available on iTunes though! Hope that helps.

Wether people liked or disliked the man is irrelevant. But to use a thread such as this to poke fun at other peoples grief is beneath contempt. It shows how as a society how we have detached ourselves from each others emotions. That we are incapable of allowing genuine fans discuss what was for them the funeral of a man who meant so much to them is reprehensible. All of us will attend the funeral of a close friend or relative, that is inevitable. We will however have the luxury of privacy, something which could not be afforded to the Ryan's. When the day comes for your own greiving and those of you who felt the need to be cruel on this topic realise just how insensitive you have been. I hope you remember this thread and when you shed a tear it will drip on crocodile skin. Life is short and manners cost nothing.
