I remember when Bush started he said that he intended to make America take less of a role in world affairs, downplay the whole 'world police' thing and focus on the US economy. He got a lot of criticism for saying that cos of the key role the US played in the Balkans and the fact that as the only real superpower (at the time) the world needed them to provide security. (Edit- maybe I should provide a link for this assertion but I cant be ar5ed so I will concede I am mistaken if anyone calls shenanigans but honestly thats my recollection at least)

Then of course 9/11 happened and well, the rest is history. Damned if you do, damned if you dont I suppose.

No provocation? Now, I don't for one second condone the evil bastards that planned, funded or carried out the attack on 9/11. But it was hardly unprovoked. The US has been poking its nose in the political and religious affairs of many countries for decades.

The bit that sortof irks me is that Iraq very arguably has been won which isn't so much being recognised. It took a lot longer, and was a lot messier than it needed to be, but is approaching the endgame. But that's the one which was more controversial.

As for legacy, I think it's going to change over time, as people who have their own personal dislikes of the man die off and just historians with the benefit of a century of hindsight simply look at the results. Legacies certainly should not be built on jingoism. ("Election he didn't win? You've seen the analysis that says that had the recounting requested by Gore not been stopped, he's still have lost?)

I agree with that. Bush isn't a bad person - he was underqualified to be President. I think once 9/11 hit he found himself in too deep and let Cheney take control.

A bit like McCain in a way - I don't think McCain is a bit person, he just went along with whatever his campaign staff told him to do... which included a lot of negative ads (which I know isn't rare in US political campaigns, but just not something I think McCan was 100% comfortable with).

I heard a while ago that when Russia attacked* Georgia soon after Obama's election victory, Cheney had pressured Bush to take military action against Russia.... scary thought what would have happened if Bush had of said yes.

*More complicated than that - Russia claim they were defending themselves.

I know Gore didn't ask for a recount of all of Florida, but if he had of then he would have won.

Anyway, last year Bush was ironically giving a talk on motivational speaking.... the price of tickets was close to free and it still didn't sell out I don't think.

I hear Bush is doing a lot of fishing these days with old family friends, the Bin Ladens. Osama B even drops in now and again to Crawford and they reminisce about the 'War on Terra'.
