Who’s Eligible?

Students are eligible to be considered for a GMS scholarship if they:

* Are African American, American Indian/Alaska Native*, Asian Pacific Islander American** or Hispanic American
* Are a citizen, national or legal permanent resident of the United States
* Have attained a cumulative high school GPA of 3.3 on an unweighted 4.0 scale or have earned a GED
* Will be enrolling for the first time at a U.S. accredited*** college or university as a full-time, degree-seeking, first-year student in the fall 2010
* Have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular, or other activities
* Meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria
* Have completed and submitted all three required forms (Nominee Personal Information Form, Nominator Form, and Recommender Form) by the deadline

There are white people who are at an extreme disadvantage in society also. Just because there is a lesser percentage of white people at a disadvantage it makes it okay to exclude these people? The requirements should not be race related but rather situation related (financial, family etc.) Classic reverse racism.

who are you to tell bill gates what to do with his money? there are plenty of scholarship schemes for caucasians in america aswell. if you look at the top ranked schools there demographics are severely skewed in favour of caucasians. you need dedicated ethnic minority scholarships to encourage those people in particular to aim high

I agree fully, color should not be even considered here. I guess it's similar to Madonna and other celebs who go out of their way to adopt an exotic child. No white children, local children, has to be Asian or African or some other ethnicity, as long as it's not the "norm."

No, just as an Irish person who immigrated to the US then wouldn't be called Irish American.

African American is just the PC term for a black person used for government paperwork and other forms.

Where in my post am I telling Bill Gates what to do with his money? I was pointing out that it was racist which it clearly is as it discriminates against a particular race. Those scholarship schemes for caucasions you mention are also racist for the same reasons.

The term African American is strictly referring to a U.S. person from Africa or who has ancestors from Africa, usually it's black people that is being referred to.

bill gates setting up a scholarship has nothing to do with not wanting to help the norm(bear in mind he has donated what? 95% of his wealth to charity)

the fact of the matter is there are numerous scholarship programmes that are dedicated to certain groups(men only / women only / men from a certain high school / women who got over a certain result) people choose a group to be 'patron' too because they think it needs particular attention (there is no argument that in america minority college attendance reuires attendance) its a personal choice were the money goes

if i ever get that rich for example i would probably provide a scholarship for people from university of limerick to do postgrads in top flight american schools, is this somehow wrong because im not including ucd? no its were i would like my money to go

how long will the schemes to improve these minorities general wealth and economic status take to start to have an affect? 10/20/30/50 years? its at least a generation. what about this generation who cant afford to go to college but have the intelligence and drive to do it? what do you tell them? oh sorry we cant send you because we are working on sending your grand kids instead

Well, I suppose it's his money and he can do what he likes with it once it's above board and legal. I just don't think color should factor in here. He is bringing in Race to this, not us.

yes he is because it is those races that need help with the cost of going going to college in america

that doesnt make him racist it makes him practical

and by the way if i had come from a white trailer trash background and worked my way up to be worth millions and wanted to set up a fund to help other white trailer trash i wouldnt have any problem doing it
