I was going to post this in the marketing forum but I'm sure it will get a bigger response here.

Some years ago I collected tokens from rice krispies and received a pop up watch in the post. Exciting times.

Why did they stop doing this? From a marketing point of view it was very effective....as was the free novelty item in each pack. And was there a point where it was decided that it was unhygeniec to place a toy in a bag of cereal?

Why do you think they stopped? And what was your favourite cereal treasure from your youth? Or, did you send away for anything exciting?

I worked in Xtra-vision back in the late nineties when coke label collecting was at it's height. Had two young lads come in one day, open the fridge (just over the other side of the counter) and start ripping labels off the bottles!! Started screaming at them with no effect - had to chase them out of the shop!

Found it really peculiar that they didn't just nick the coke bottles instead of just the labels, had to pull about twenty bottles without labels off the shelf. The staff were pretty happy about the free cokes though!

Yes, why did they stop doing that? It was wonderful. I also loved the cardboard cutout dinosaur heads etc - great fun!

Nowadays, they try to convince us cereals are healthf ood because they've added a whole bunch of nutrients that have no business being in cereal in the first place. Bring back the era of free toys and forget the health bs, say I!

Ah the memories

Frosties had a water game toy (push the button to blow the little rings onto a tony the tiger figure). I wanted this SOOOO much. But, because Frosties was a rare treat in our house (dunnes own brand stuff most of the time) it took months and months to collect enough tokens.

It was then honestly about 6mths before the thing showed up in the post after that. It felt like a lifetime but it was a happy happy day when it did. God to be easily pleased like that now

The trick around here was usually just to get someone who worked in the bottling place to give you a few hundred labels. Had to cut them up but it was worth it. :pac:

I remember collecting 15 Coke labels for a watch.

And the last time I collected labels for something was about 6 years ago. I had to collect 30 Lucozade labels for a mini digital camera

Oh my God, I had that too! I had completely forgotten about it, I remember the baking soda would get all gloopy in your hands when you put it under water! And then you'd forget yourself and lick your fingers and it tasted awful- good times!

I remember my first ever proper cereal bowl came from sending away tokens from Rice Krispies i think they were. It had a face on it sticking its tongue out. Actually now i think of it a lot of our delph came from collecting tokens..

Double whammy was deadly!
I saved up tokens for a lucky charms mug that changed colour when you poured a hot liquid in it. Still have it I think!

I remember saving up enough tokens to get a Big Mac at McDonalds (think it was with Corn Flakes?)

Back when McD's was new(ish), we had to travel up to the city for it cos there was no local McD's

We were very excited

Even worse were those plasticy things that had a picture in them and the picture would kinda change a bit if you turned them sideways. How is that as good as a toy?

Ah I loved those 'Hologram' cards, and of course the bicycle reflectors, I remember sendin away for a big box of cool stuff from weetabix.

I also vaugley remember pesterin me mam for some shredded wheat ( which I thought was awful) just so I could get one of the toys.

the women/mothers use to love the Dawn Milk Cartons. Collect so many and you had a big variety from their catalogue to get various kitchen stuff (yawn), bikes (interesting) and DIY stuff. Got my first GAA jersey from it. classic.

Anyone remember those glow in the dark Caspear the ghost (gggghhhhhhaaaaaaayyy) stickers. We use to give them to our nan, 13 years on they are still on their kitchen wall. Jesus! (no kitchen extension there then lol )

maybe with the boom and spare money (to buy the fancy cereal and freedom to stick ones nose up to Quinswoth/Dunnes branded food for the more flashy stuff) these companies taught we mere mortals don't need freebies to buy their stuff? Maybe they were looking at all the money they could make and slash unneccessary costs.

Even the fecking Cadbury Selection boxes are rubbish now. There use to be way better selection and sizes. The puzzels/colour in is crap. Do they still offer trips to Disney land for best picture etc?

When Mars was doing that work rest and play/ get active craic, they use to give away some really nice sports bags. 30 or 40 bar wrappers. tough going, particularily if you prefer snickers.
