New Smoking Legislation

Micheál Martin is set to ban smoking in pubs and restaurants when and where food is being served. Do you think this is a good idea?

I, for one, think its a fantastic idea. He hasn't a snowballs chance in hell of banning smoking completely in pubs, but this is a good move in the right direction. The worst thing about a night out on the town is smelling like a bloody ashtray at the end of the night.

Do you think it could/should go further than the new legislation (i.e. a complete ban in pubs?)

Because a law making air-conditioning compulsory would cost publicans money, whereas a total ban on smoking in pubs wouldn't cost them a cent (except for maybe the small loss of revenue from cigarette vending machines).

I'm sure a law on air conditioning would be enforcable. It's a matter of general hygiene as well. If it was done, non-smokers could tolerate smokers much easier without the need for killing the governments precious income on tobacco tax.

I think smoker/non-smoker segregation is long overdue. I'm frankly sick to death of non-smokers "passively" inhaling my sweet sweet smoke.

If they want my glorious nicotine then they can fúcking pay for it like I have to. It's €5.40 a pack in most pubs now and at least 50% of my smoke runoff is going into non-smokers lungs. This isn't on.

The parasitic non-smoker contributes nothing to the pub atmosphere where every breath is a wonderful starburst explosion of tabacco based delight. Go on, shoo little non-smoker and try not to let any smoke past you on your way out.

Apart from air-conditioning being useless when there's someone smoking near you, the vinter's association would never go for it because it would cost publicans money.

A complete ban on smoking pubs would not affect the government's tobacco tax income in the slightest - just because they can't smoke in pubs doesn't mean that smokers will suddenly stop smoking or buying cigarettes.

If im in a pub with 10 or 15 friends, 8-13 of them would be smokers. If i go to a lan party, i find that im one of only a few smokers there. I have no idea what the difference is, but i dont choose my friends on whether they smoke or not.

I think that's an age thing to a large degree Lee - and no, I'm not trying to be funny! Obviously background comes into it as well (in general, the people who can least afford a fiver for a packet of fags are the ones who want 'em most... go figure) but I believe that smoking numbers ARE falling off among young people, and have been for some time.

It's also a simple fact that educated, intelligent teenagers now are less likely to smoke than their counterparts even ten years ago because of the level of information available to them about tobacco. A lot of kids probably try smokes and decide that frankly, that buzz isn't worth throwing a decade or two of your life away on; at the very least, if you're going to do potentially damaging drugs, do something with a bit of a kick...

Its a trend I am also seeing. A large group of my friends have now taken the road of hipnotism and it has actaully got them off smoking for the past month. Whether it lasts or not is another thing, but they all are saying its the best €165 they ever spent.

I tried smoking and did for 2 months but i gave up because the thought of turning into what I see now a days; people caughing up a load of crap and the fact that its not really worth it in the end (besides being in with the :cool: kids).

I think there is a rise in social smoking rather than people who may have gotten addicted from an early age or who grew up in a family of smokers. People smoke on a night out, just because other people are or as a way to meet other people "have u got a light". I think a complete ban would stop that kind of smoking on a night out and maybe give people an incentive to quit,,, instead of having to go out in the cold, wind & rain just to satisfy the craving (which im not underestimating as something thats easy to do). Do you really want you kids taking that stuff into their lungs?
