I am so f**king angry at your comment right now. It's totally pathetic, and do you know what, I expected that there would be some idiotic comments about lazy/greedy/selfish teachers looking for more holidays etc etc when that couldn't be further from the truth.

Dublin Bus have cancelled some of their services, airports closed, people would choose not to drive where at all possible, yet all you can do is moan about 4000 schools and goodness knows how many teachers [when it wasn't their decision at all] being off until Thursday at least for the SAFETY of all involved.

I have to travel 100miles just to get to school [I was visiting family at Xmas] and am terrified of the travelling conditions near my school - bus routes have been cancelled, warned it is an ice rink etc.

The cheek of you has me seething right now, and those bravado posters who 'thanked' you unnecessarily are just as bad.

PS Wanted to add, I have NO problem making up the days in reasonable weather. I'm just relieved I don't have to risk my life [and others] by driving to work - not to mention the 500+ parents/children that would make the journey also.

I teach in a school with about 280 students and only 90 were in for the last two days. So to suggest it's the teachers that want the time off is just pure typical stupidity of teacher bashers- the students aren't travelling and rightly so, the way the roads are at the moment.

I'm fairly surprised that all schools were directed to close but having said that, the uncertainty of whether to open or not was extremely irritating over the last few days. It's good to have a definite decision now at least.

I presume they will have to make the time up by postponing the summer holidays?

Nothing a few local farmers and a couple of transport boxes couldn't fix, certainly for our local national school :rolleyes:.

I hope someone has kept the heat on in the schools or else burst pipes will mean they will have to close for another while too after the thaw.

Yeah our school opened up yesterday. I was in and probably took about 50 phone calls from parents asking if the school was open. In the end there were probably more phone calls than pupils. Attendance was pathetically low.

My principal walked to school. It took her about 2 hours and she got to the school at 8 upon which she cleared all the pathways of snow and salted them. It nearly killed her that she had to close the school for today despite it being the only sensible decision in the interest of safety to make. She couldn't so any more to keep the place open to the point it was almost farcical.

Also, I'd prefer to be in school too. I am getting cabin fever and will have no problem making the time up.

A friend of mine is doing her Leaving Cert.
Earlier this year, she was off school for ages because of the floods. And now, this.
Major distraction!

I think schools are being closed more so to prevent people from travelling on the roads, rather than because teachers are being whiny, to be honest.

Apparently the country is nearly out of Salt.
But I have about half a packet (container?) in my kitchen. Will need some, but not much, for chips later on.
Maybe we could rustle up a good amount together to keep for the duration of the crisis.

your comment is so offensive. I am not a teacher before you jump down my neck. Yes Canada etc. have it worse, but they can deal with it better, they have provisions, chains on tyres , snow ploughs etc. It is not the schools' faults that the damn government aren't prepared for this weather and that they have ran out of grit etc.
It is completely unfair to compare this cold snap in an unprepared Ireland to Canada's consistent snowy weather.

That's not the issue if you had read the posts you are replying to. teachers can for the most part get to work,it is the students that havn't been getting to class and in many places it is very dangerous to do so if they are walking or cycling.

Well, we have trains, (LUAS in dublin too). Pretty sure most here have legs. Most will have a bike too.

So there, you can avail of public Transport, Walk, Cycle.

Hell thanks to all the Moaning you may even get a lift in a APC.

I understand some areas are bad, BUT I live in dublin and the only issue is having to travel at 30KMPH.
Every school doesnt need to be closed, I think its more than a coincedince that schools are the first to be closed everytime we get something more than a frost or a shower.

In most places, If you need to get somewhere, you can.

Pathetic. If your child slipped and broke her neck on the way to school or your wife skidded into another car while driving to the school then you'd no doubt be the first to condemn "teachers" for not closing schools, for putting lives at risk and much more.

Parent are angry as there babysitting service is closed, so teachers are going to be blamed. (Naive parents think teachers are overpaid and under worked as it is) So the ignorant will continue to blame teachers unfortuneately.

How about the UK then? By all accounts its worse there. They have only closed Services now.

On a scale of 1-10, were at like 4, they are at 7.

Dublin City may have public transport, but I can guarantee it hardly exists in the rest of the country [but that is a different matter].

Yes perhaps some children can walk/cycle 'safely' to school, but I think you're forgetting that there is a horrifiic forecast for the East for the weekend, and with no let up on this ice, there is no chance for what's there to thaw, which means there are layers and layers of unthawed ice, providing an ice rink.

Secondly, not all teachers live right beside their school - many teachers must travel backroads, and long distances in order to arrive at their school. THIS provides yet another obstacle to schools opening safely. As unforunately, without teachers present, schools cannot operate.

Ah Jesus. Now have to try and find a childminder. I can understand some schools having to close, but my son's was open the last 2 days and there didn't seem to be low attendance, he said there was 3 missing from his class. Could they not have left it to the individual boards of management to decide like this week. I can't afford to take time off work for this.

The teachers haven't closed the schools, the Minister has. Personally, I'm dying of cabin fever up here and I'd rather be at school. I presume the logic is the unwillingness of the Govt to pay out insurance claims if a schoolbus crashes on our ungritted roads or if children fall in the yards. Closed schools take tens of thousands of vehicles off the roads.
