SOCKS OVER SHOES

With the weather and everyone falling on their asses.(Apparently 5000+ patients have visited hospitals etc with fall injuries since cold snap started.)
German friends suggested something to my wife a few days back that they do in germany to prevent slipping on ice.
To prevent slipping on ice put a pair of socks on over your shoes and you won't slip on the ice.My wife and her friends tried it today and they all said it worked for them.

Don't know if it will help,but if it prevents someone getting injured its all to the good.
Now i just have to figure out how to get these damned socks on the car.GRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Socks over shoes just reminded me of the simpsons.

In Rand McNally people wear hats on there feet and burgers eat people.

Good idea on the socks though but in fear of being seen by anybody Id rather take the fall.

I have my own path-gritting mechanism as seen in the great escape.

I have two bags of sand down the legs of my trousers and a release pin which can be released to grit the path underneath me.

* Am now patenting the idea of glueing sandpaper on the soles of my shoes for grip.

I wacked a few staples into the bottom of my trainers earlier, absolutely no problems so far:D (soles need to be thick enough though)

Instead of wrapping a sock over your shoe, another tip is to put a strip of brown adhesive bandage (like this) along the length of the sole of your shoe, or a few short strips across the width. It won't make you look as ridiculous as wearing a sock over your shoes and provides good traction.

So far I've only slipped once (not counting the times I've been sledding). All I got was a bruise on my thigh. You just have to be careful and watch every step to not slip...if you're on a patch of ice, don't walk, slide.

I swear to god - all the ladies out there, high heels are a far preferable option than flats or runners. I walked 45 mins to and from work in Dublin all week and managed to stay vertical, having payed no heed to the looks I was getting i.e. 'where does your one think she is going in the stilettos?!' If you think about it, same concept as drilling a screw into your sole (suggested above).

Having said that, I wouldn't mind trying out the socks over shoes option. One question, must the socks be of the mad thick woolly variety or will a thinnish pair do?

Wool is the traditional choice... I think the protuding hairs play their part.

I did this on my way too and from work, with shoes that have no friction on the soles and it worked.

Heard somebody in college talking about how great they were but Great Outdoors were out of them. Found some in Go Tactical in Bray, an airsoft/outdoor equipment shop for €25 (apparently Great Outdoors were doing them for €35). They just stretch over shoes, they're fairly hardy and look like they'd take a beating. They've got 6 small metal studs in the bottom (2 spares are included) so should keep me upright on icy footpaths. Can't wait for the next couple weeks of snow now!
