Climate change may or may not be a natural/manmade occurence but don't you think its at least funny that after the big song and dance do-nothing useful conference in Copenhagen recently on the impending disaster that awaits us from global warming, we then have the coldest winter in decades:D. You HAVE to see the funny side in all this, unless you're a member of the Green party, speaking of which, where is our green environment minister who has responsibility for funding the local authorities. Perhaps he's so convinced about this heating up of the planet that he's living in denial of the cold snap and thus won't dole out money to get more salt/grit on the roads.:rolleyes:

Charco - Climate change occurs throughout history. I think we should be aiming to find alternatives to oil and other things, but I am not sure at present as to whether or not global warming is occurring. I mean wasn't it the point that the co2 was removing the ozone layer, and warming the earth, melting the polar ice caps?

I disagree the whole issue is that no one denys our climate is changing it's just genuine* skeptics aren't convinced by the significance of our role in it. This leads to one central argument : Is the best way to combat climate change by

It's really that simple.

To be perfectly honest if it's not man made then we will be in for an even stickier ride because mitigation is far more practical than adaptation.

I believe that the planet is overpopulated and close to a tipping point, there can be no question that we are having SOME tangible impact on the earth.... The human race really is just like a virus.

However the earth does go through it's own extreme weather cycles, this is not to be forgotton. Ice ages, extended warm periods....Sea leves have risen and fell numerous times.

For us we are hyper-sensitive to it because we are threatened with it now, it's not just some record in a history book and this hyper-sensitivity can lead to many different avenues of speculation as to what is causing the changes in the weather.

For me I believe that it is Human and naturally driven.

We have one really hot week and one really cold week every year.
Every time they come around, people get excited about climate change.

This is the first time we've had a decent amount of snow in a while.
Enjoy it while it lasts.

I'll see you in 5-6 months time when the sun shines more than most months

CFCs (which are also a minute proportion of GHG) were removing the ozone layer.
Melting the polar ice caps is only part really tiny piece of it.:)

General predictions for ireland are just two general seasons (winter and summer).
Increased frequency of intense of rainfall in winter, and in summer increased periods of drought with possibly increased frequency of intense rainfall.
It is predicted that certain crops in ireland (e.g potatoes -can't remember the other ones) will become hard, if not impossible, to cultivate and grow by farmers.
Certain ecosystems will be threatened and many low lying areas will be subject to more flooding.

I don't think we should condemn ourselves for existing. Humans are having a negative impact on the environment in numerous ways including:
1) Landfill
2) Polluting rivers / seas
3) Increasing erosion by modifying rivers and sea structures
4) Causing smog
5) Desertification
6) Destroying rainforests etc.

We also happen to be wasting food on an obscene level in America and in Europe, and throwing it away before it even gets sold! Not that that is an environmental issue, but it is a problem.

These are things that we can and do need to change. The OP is right to be asking whether or not global warming is down to humans, and we have to ask whether the warming trend is reversing or not.

Supposedly before humans the background rate of extinction was 1 species every four years. With modern humans it's about 120,000 times that rate.:(

And are we to blame for dinosaurs becoming extinct too and all the other extinct species that lived on the planet? What about all the new species of animals and insect that are being discovered? This planet is evolving as are we as human beings, we'd be still in the sea or swinging off trees if it wasn't for evolution, it's time to adapt not pay taxes because the bottom line is money.

I don't believe that the weather this year and last year is a result of global warming/climate change or whatever you want to call it. The sun is pretty much dead right now so that is most likely the cause. Expect more of the same (including dodgy summers) until solar activity picks up again.

I'm not saying that we aren't destroying the planet but I think it's exaggerated - groups are too quick to throw the climate change card when something unexpected happens. Mary Robinson tried to blame the November floods on it when, lets face it, lots of new properties were built in flood plains over the last decade.
