If you saw a fella hitting a girl, what would you do?

Right, so I was out in a certain takeaway in Portmarnock this evening and t'was madness. A biggish group of people come in and have a massive argument, I'm guessing between a guy, his mate and a girlfriend with an entourage of mainly birds there too. Some terrible things were said, "you tranny whore" etc etc, men were slapped and a couple of times one particular guy tried and I think, managed (partly maybe) to belt a girl accross the head. He was completely off his rocker, pushed the two or three girls the length of the shop into us at the back at one stage. Hurling lots of abuse etc. People seemed not to want to get involed on the whole but some were held back.

I was really tempted to step in but held back because I knew the Gardaí were on the way because the not very tall and outnumbered security man had been on the phone, I was driving and stone cold sober so I suppose that helped. All three of my group were I'd say VERY close to jumping on him. I was sorely tempted to point him out to the Guards when they arrived but was terrified I'd just start another fight, this time including me.

Scary stuff anyway. Hard to sit there and watch a girl being treated like that. All concerned with sub-23yrs I'd say. Anyway question being, if you were drunk/sober would you jump in or stay back? I kind of feel I did the right thing, but then if she'd been badly hurt I'd be gutted. BTW atari option is not caring, NOT that youd deck the bastard.

(and before anyone gets all Feeky Magee on me, yes she was hot (and how!), no I don't have pics)

Saw some fella yelling at his girlfriend one time, really threatening her and such, so I said something to him, the girl turned around and gives me an incredible earful of abuse and tells me to **** off and mind my business. Heard from others who'd intervened in similar situations and got some very violent reactions from the girls.

You hit girlfriend bashing scumbag #1.

Scumbag and girlfriend now have new common enemy - you

Scumbag + scumbag mates (urged on and including the slappers you were galantly defending) will go for you.

You have to understand, scumbags are pack animals, so be prepared to take on the whole pack, including the birds.

It's dangerous to get involved, i've known cases where people have been attacked or stabbed....unless it was an extreme situation i would walk away. Often these fights turn into makeup sex...or one or the other cheating.

Fair assement, but only relates to yer average council estate scumbag....but most times they are the likely clan to be battering each other on the street.

This is pretty much the outcome of most cases. But there could be a tikme when a girl may need help. It's just a mattee od judging if she herself is a scumbag as well as her fella. But in most cases I'd try not get involved for the reasons I've quoted above.

Has happened me twice and I have other friends who have told me similar stories of getting involved backfiring.

Now, I just phone the Guards and move on.

Walk away the hassle is never worth it. I've seen many instance where someone gets involved only to end up with a stiletto to the face. I saw a girl kicking the crap out of a lad one night and when he slapped her back a group of lads attacked him for hitting the girl. That she had been beating him before this was irrelevant to them and I ended up getting hit in the face a few time for trying to pull them off of him.

seen it twice... I dont think Ill get involved again... Girl friend nearly allways turns on you... How much they love him... Lucky for me cops were about 1 minute away so it was like break it up and stall untill they run up... First one the boy friend put her through a glass window.. She was lucky it was saftey glass or she would of been ****ed...

None of the above - I've stepped in a few times, but smacking the guy just leads to the situation mentioned, ie they both gang up on you. Adding violence to a violent situation is never going to help. And ask yourself why are you hitting the guy, is it some kind of caveman attempt to impress?

If it's one on one guy - girl I just step in and ask if there's a problem - if they both start screeaming at you to fcuk off, happy days, step away. If they're there with their own group, again, happy days, their friends should be sorting it out and the last thing anyone needs is a circle-stomping to go with their take away...

I was on a visit to London this year, saw a guy having a serious blowup screaming row with his girlfriend off trafalgar square, he ended up slapping her, I went over at the same time as a pair of fairly stereotypical chavs... long story short, it ended up being a case of preventing the chavs from kicking the **** out of him while she got into a taxi and left

If it's a boyfriend/girlfriend setup, I tend to think that in all probability that's not the 1st (or 2nd or 3rd) time he's treated her like this, and if she's still happy to go out socialising and drinking with him then there's not much I can do.

The few times I've witnessed these incidents and seen someone step in, the reaction from the girl involved has always been of the
"F**k off, leeeeve myyyy feellllaaahhh allllowww--in."
variety, and I've no inclination to try to help people that are f**king stupid TBH.

Rule of thumb I use is whether the girl is hitting/mouthing back. If so, then I stay out of it.

Anyway I would hold off and watch from a distance. If it gets to bad i would call an ambulence. That way the guards would be called as well. If you just ring the guards its been my experence they do not come.

I know of someone that defended a woman in that kind of situation. The bf who was hitting the girl, ran back to a house got a knife and fatally stabbed the guy who intervened. Some of you probably heard the case on the news a few years back. Was very sad.

I always think of that when I hear a question like this. Is it worth getting involved if that is the kind of person you may be dealling with?

I've got involved in several instances of things like this, none of them have ever come back at me or tried to hit me..

Very simple - don't get involved. If it's a situation where the woman is scared and obviously doesn't want to be attacked, then it makes sense to step in and/or flatten the guy. However, in 99% of these cases in Dublin, it's two dirtbags having their usual Saturday night 'domestic' in the kebab queue. The kind of people who engage in this type of behaviour have the propensity to grab sharp objects and stab you, so steer clear. Sometimes what looks like a violent, dangerous situation might just be two people having a good night out... in their eyes.

Yeah, that's really weird. I worked as a doorman for about 5 years and every single time I got involved in one of these situations, the woman turned on me. So your experience is the exception, not the rule. Believe me.

Women who are involved with guys like this are as big a low lifes as the guys and I can guarantee you if you tried to "help" her then she would turn on you as well. We all have to be responsible for ourselves and the people we choose to hang out with. No sympathy for women or men who find themselves in ****ty situations like this.
