Why is it that so many people seam to think that unless you drink yourself stupid you can't enjoy a good day or nite out?

I rarely drink and in my whole life got drunk twice and didn't enjoy the experience one bit.

What so good about not remembering anything, making a fool of oneself, fighting, drink driving, etc, etc and feeling crap the next day?

I've had my share of mad drunken nights. I've had my nights of sober driver. Even nights like last night where it cost me more in taxi money than alcohol. 3 drinks and home. Just casual stuff.

Its about how you handle yourself and the night. Do you know your limits or always try to go past them?

meh. i dont see why there's 'rules' around altering your mind. it's alright around a few other people, but not by yourself. what's wrong with drinking by yourself?! or it's ok at night, but not in the day. why not in the day? i happen to enjoy the sunshine while im drinking, it also happens to be when im less tired, which tends to mean im less likely to get messy drunk, and more likely to get something resembling a 'normal' night's sleep.

gah. i have no problem with people not drinking. that's perfectly cool if that's your thing. but i dont see why people feel the need to judge how other people drink, and make rules around it, justifying it under certian conditions, but not under others.

I rarely drink much going out- I just could't be arsed. I also start to get a bit depressed and antisocial after a few drinks whereas sober I'm the life and soul of the party...(in my mind)!

Which probably explains why I end up dragging along other folks from my class to go for those one or two pints

I'd have no trouble popping up by myself to a pub and having one pint if I had to kill an hour or so. It's just nice to have some company so the time goes a bit faster, you know?

It is true alot of the time though.. When people are out of college, a few pints becomes the norm because this is your chance to meet up with friends. In college, you hang round with your friends constantly. Why pay 20quid on a couple of pints when you spend all your time with them anyway.

THANK you. With a few hours to spare if classes get cancelled I have also suggested going to the pubs up the road for one or two. Just to pass those hours. I got looks and comments like "what's the point...it's a waste of money".

They then suggested sure why not buy a six pack and sit in the flat -.-
I don't want to sit in a flat. I want to sit in a nice warm comfy pub with some mates just chilling out and only one drink in front of me.
Not to get steaming just to relax! I really don't see that as a waste of money.
Oh that did annoy me. Fair enough if they person is broke and doesn't wish to go to the pub.

That's another thing. Alot of people in Ireland also won't go to the pub unless they have a good bit of money on them.
I've no trouble hanging along with friends who are going for a pint and I've no money! Doesn't bother me in the slightest. The pub owner/staff aren't going to care if you are not drinking seeing as your friends are!

As for the social crutch thing. I'd agree on some levels.
I know I don't dance unless I've a few drinks in me! But that's a self-esteem thing for me.

What are you on about? Just because you don't like the feeling of being drunk, doesn't mean others don't. People drink, take drugs, fuk, smoke fags, get massages and do skydives because of what it feels like.. They like the buzz it gives them.

I see where the non drinkers here are coming from. Its common to be on the receiving end of constant nagging/slagging if you're drinkin coke all night. When Ive had afew myself, I know ive pestered friends to have a drink. The Irish definitly use alcohol as a social crutch. We feel we wont have as good a time if we're not all well oiled, and with the best of intentions we dont want our friends to miss out on what we think will be a better night out.

The sad thing is theres alot of truth in that imo. Some of the most memorable times Ive had with friends on a night out was when we were all near enough pished. Some of the worst nights was when we werent....

I agree that there is an immuturity towards drink in this country,probably because so many people are drinking underage.

Least in the locals I can ask for the big coke bottle and ask for a dash.

Though in some places they have started charging for that as well. Suppose it was only a matter of time.

Don't have much sympathy for the pub owners who complain about lack of punters.
Drop your prices, hire some lad to do cheap taxi runs/have it complimentary free taxi.**
More people will turn up! People do like to drink.

I don't drink but I have been last out of the pub on tues and wednesday, left it at 2 on thurs, was in my mates house with people drinking all day yesterday and I'm heading out now in a few mins and I suspect it's gonna be a late one tonight.

I don't drink myself but a lot of my friends do.They do it to escape the monotony of working all week and going to the pub and having a few drinks gives them a release i can see where they're coming from.They maybe make fools of themselves with drink talk etc but if they don't mind talking ****e then who am i to complain

I rarely go out, but when I do Its with full intention of getting at leasta bit tipsy. Thats why I have a case of miller for myself for new years. Normally it starts off with a mate and I playing vodka roulette and then hitting a pub for a hour, then finding a party and waking up on a couch with awful hangovers- and complete memory of what happened. I only had one bad night out and Still remember every detail. I dont drink regularly... But when I do... I ****ing do it properly! PROPA FOOKED without idiocy.
