So I was wombling in the snow today (no-one saw) when it struck me - what exactly are the Wombles? Rats? Voles? Some kind of rodent? Now I know that Snarf from the Thundercats is a snarf, because he's from a race of Snarfs and helpfully his name is also Snarf - but Wombles?

I've heard plenty of stories of young kids walking down by Wimbledom Common, and throwing cans/wrappers on the floor. When asked why, they replied it was to attract the Wombles
