If you're putting in, say, €40 of petrol, and you go over the amount by a few cents, (which is easy to do), should you have to pay the extra?

No.. you should get free petrol.. infact overfill by €20 next time and tell them it was an accident... /facepalm

Some stations are nice and let you off but its upto the attendant really whether its worth the hassle or not

I used to work in a petrol station. I never gave a fiddlers sh!te until people went about 5 or 6cent over, that was just deliberate.

The amount of people who would get 19.98 when they meant to get 20 was huge tho.

Some of them aren't easy to get right, that's the problem. I have said this to the garages in question and they have tended to agree with me and said that its' a common complaint and I don't mind paying the extra few cents at all.

BTW I used to work as a pump attendant when I was at college for a small garage, so I have plenty of practise.

I'v recently worked in a in a garage in lucan and never demanded the extra few cent...was let go last month because they were'n making enough money...next time ill be charging you all !!!!:mad:

You already do pay. It's built into the price. Like pens from the bookies. Little shampoos from the hotel. Glasses from the pub. Cutlery from the restaurant.

Most pumps have a device that speeds up every time the customer approaches a round number (10.00,15.00 etc.).
When they have then sped past the initial round number they had selected a lot of people will then continue pumping petrol to reach the next round number ,satisfying peoples odd desire for zeros after a number (as evidenced by the self-congratulatory threads when someone here reaches a 1000 posts etc.).
It's just another nasty little psycological trick the oil companies play on us.

I never get charged for going 2 or 3 cent over if paying with cash, but if I pay with the laser card they always charge for it even 1 cent.

I kinda have a limit. Over 4 cent and I'll pay the extra, under and I dont bother. I did get asked for 20 euros and 1 cent by some girl working in a petrol station in the middle of no where once, the only time any of them ever seamed bother.

When i was at the counter ppl paying with laser tried to give me the 2 or 3 cent to even it out...Idiots...it doesn't even make cents !!

OK, let me re-phrase the question. If a retail outlet are supplying a machine for self serving their produce, and this machine is very hard to operate to an accurate level, should the consumer be penalized?
