Right first off.
Please read this sitewide announcement for details on where the best place to post is. This thread is for the AH take on the situation. Might cheer some people up.
Rules: I know ye hate them but they are necessary.
1. No negative generalisation about public or private service. This is very important to note as both public and private service are regular posters on boards and we don't want any insults.
And that's about it other than the usual charter rules.
Issues raised so far (Please feel free to add to / debate these as all is speculation until tomorrow):

Taoiseach Brian Cowen was tonight warned of alleged attempts to overthrow him by a senior Cabinet minister as the countdown begins to the most feared Budget in living memory.

In a sensational claim, adding to the woes of the embattled premier as he faces into an unprecedented €4bn cost-cutting plan, it was claimed that Finance Minister Brian Lenihan was hatching a planned coup.

It also looks like a public service pay cut may come in across the board, though the extent is being debated. The taoiseach is possibly taking a 57 grand paycut according to the Sindo, the ministers somewhere in the region of 33 grand. Social welfare to be hit by 4%. Indications that childrens allowance is to be cut by 10%. Cost of booze might go down! (Silver lining?) (All this may become irrelevant once announcements come in)
Well, can Lenihan pull some magic our of his hat or are we all doomed? Please post relevant links wherever possible. Lets try and make this a news feed and not a troll fest. They work in the public sector, therefore they are employed by the government. The government are in big trouble money-wise, and need to cut costs etc.

I work for a small IT company in the private sector. My boss had big money problems (still does) for the past 12-18 months, so last January he introduced a pay cut. I didn't even bat an eye lid to be honest. I took it on the chin, because I can see that he was losing so much money elsewhere, that he needed to do this. He let one of the girls go a few weeks back. Again, he really didn't want to, but HAD to.

How in the name of Jesus do people expect to remain untouched when the hand that is feeding them is getting poorer and poorer??

Yeah, but when it's only the public sector of the work force being hit by the government, it must be a bit of a kick in the face.

Plus, 5-15% of your wages is a considerable amount. People have every right to be disappointed.

5% on the first 30,000

7.5% on the next up to 40,000

10% on the next 55,000

I don't think anyone expected to remain untouched, but to be told in one day that your wages are being slashed by 5-15% percentage, that has to be a shocker.

It's just going to be a difficult next few months for a lot of people, if not everyone.
